Reviews for "Just Passing"

Looks good, but please add an option to change the quality next time. The loading took ages for me...

JoelLikesPigs responds:

Ah sorry about the long waiting time

The game is about 8mb due to music - sadly I can’t reduce the quality before the game loads the assets - so as far as I’m aware this wouldn’t be possible

Still thanks for checking out the game

I know this used to work before as I've completed out the entire game in an earlier version before you added medals, so you likely broke it in an update, but even after you talk to the weird one-eyed train conductor thing and receive your quest to collect the souls, you then exit the train station and you still cannot stray from "the path" as it'll give you those various messages about ants being in the way or not straying from "the path".

Game is broken, until you fix this.

Quite annoying that.

JoelLikesPigs responds:

That’s really bizarre - I honestly don’t know what’s causing this - because I’ve never experienced this glitch myself but others have and when I’ve asked for more details they say it works now (?!?) - my only guess is the quest (which triggers the stay on path cutscene object to get deleted) never triggered or somehow doesn’t get added to the quest list.

If you can recreate the error please send me a DM on how you did it because without it I can’t fix it

The game has a nice concept and feel to it. The music is fitting for the setting and the conversations are interesting. However, there can also be some improvements such as shortening the transition time when entering and exiting doors. On my first playthrough, I've encountered some bugs, for example, unable to break the glass box eventhough I've acquired the hammer which led to a stalemate and being unable to finish the game. It appears it does not occur if I do not acquire the hammer at the start of the game. All in all, great short game. Keep it up

JoelLikesPigs responds:

That's an odd one - the system I have in place searches through the entire inventory for the hammer's name and as long as the thirsty ghost isn't present and you have the hammer you should be able to take the baseball

Just did a quick test and it worked on my end - If you could send me any details in a DM I'll try to fix it. For example what browser are you using and did you do anything differently when the glitch first happened?

This was a cute little game, simple with some charming dialogue. There were some inconsistencies with collision (going through crates and part of the cliff behind the barn.) Also, the art was really pleasant to look at, but clearly the production was rushed. Some of the assets were clearly copy and pasted a bit haphazardly. I recall seeing a beer bottle seemingly on the wall of one of the ghost's homes. Perhaps the bottle is also a ghost? For a game that took you 3 weeks to make this turned out pretty well. The fact that you're fixing bugs and adding new things to the game kinda pushed my rating from a 3.5 to a 4 but I suggest working on a new game. However, if you plan on using this game in a portfolio of some sort then I suggest polishing up a little bit on the collision on some of the objects and organizing some of the art assets.

Tl;dr: Fun simple game. Appreciate bug fixes and polishing but perhaps the time would be better spent on a new project. Either way, good work and keep it up!

Wishing the best

This is a really nice game. I enjoyed the style and story, as well as the characters. The hidden text breaking the fourth wall and the hidden ghosts were really cool to find too. I also appreciate the achievement ghost idea... I did, however, notice a few less-than-stellar things here and there.
~For one, the music in the lake area doesn't follow personal settings (had music off and it startled me), and footsteps are loud even at 2% volume.
~The map is nice but it's not 100% accurate. It shows drink machines, but not the Boo-long Tea machine in the village. I can pull it up while I'm standing by the Inn and I'll be shown as next to the Flower Shop, a different area below where I am currently.
~Sometimes I spawn into a new game and it's soft-locked. The bus scene won't occur (I can just walk from my seat immediately), but I'll have the prompt in my phone to figure out what happened. Trying to talk to the ghost in the station only has her tell me to go GET the souls, without the scene of the player being shocked and getting the explanation that unlocks the rest of the map. Thus, I can't reach the souls to finish the quest I got without actually starting it and I won't get an option to repeat the conversation.
~The medals glitched for me in a different way than the usual NG way. When I beat the game, the Ticket to Ride medal would not stop reappearing on my screen, even in the main menu and my next new game. A similar issue happened when I talked to the medal ghost. The medals pop up in a constant cycle from first to last, which somehow caused them to not unlock at first and become unclickable for me since they're constantly 'updating'

JoelLikesPigs responds:

Thanks for the feedback - I just stumbled across the lake music glitch myself and just uploaded a new version that fixed that - thanks for the feedback on the medals, still trying to figure out what the issue is with them - I think the engine I use (GameMaker 2) has an issue with communicating with the NG API or something.

Also thank you for the feedback on the soft lock glitch - I've been trying to squash this bug since the beginning and honestly I'm not sure what's causing it but this will bring me a few steps closer to figuring it out

oh and the map thing is sadly an unfortunate limitation because the GPS map isn't a 1 to 1 map of the actual area I have to use fudged coordinates, so I just place your player icon in a rough area on within the place you should be - Sorta how real GPS will say you're somewhere sometimes but really you're a street over or something. So maybe in-game lore is the phone has funky GPS signal
