Encountered a gamebreaking bug in the first 10s of the game. Went left to the river it told be to go back while moving the sprite into the rock which got stuck. Not the greatest first impression. Dig the art style and music though.

Sorry about that - this is something I'm currently trying to fix, luckily this glitch is only possible during the first few moments of the game, so not much progress is ever lost. That being said I understand it can be frustrating.
Hm, decent. Has the usual problem with adventure games where you physically move around; you spend a lot of the game running from place to place with nothing interesting happening. And the unusual problem of one area (the lake) being oddly difficult to find. In an out-of-the-way area and a similar transition screenwraps instead...

Ah I'm sorry you feel this way. You are right about some of the areas being out of the way - and they can be a little hard to find as a result - I'm currently working on adding a Minimap you can access from your menu to hopefully solve this issue. It is a lovely game, really you did a beautiful job.
I can't get enough of it and I would not critic the game here because it deserve to get his own opinion by playing it. So i encourage people to actually play it. It is an instant classic.

Wow that's an incredible review - thanks so much. It's been pretty exciting having the game over here on Newgrounds - I seem to get a lot more comments from people here than I'd usually get on itch. I'll probably continue to upload stuff here in the future as well as my itch page because of it
Surprisingly good :)
All this in under a month? How much of the assets were original? Amazing game so far, everything is smooth and the design is cute. The art style, characters, and even the dialog has a very earthbound/undertale feel to them.

as for the assets, all of them are original, though some - I think maybe only the rocks, and crates are from a different game I ended up never releasing
When you actually look at everything things either use very little animation, or are very simple shapes - The hardest thing to make was the tileset which took a good day to make and I kept adding to it over the month
