Reviews for "Renaine [OLD KS BUILD I]"

I like this game,solid platformer
pros:
fast paced action
fun items
personally liked the music
many ways to beat boss/destroy enemies
chompys r cute
i made the birds explode
cons:
some items in the demo are kinda useless due to how short it is
the controls seem a little ''slippery''
bugs:
if you roll while running in direction of the invisible walls at the start of each level you can bypass them, that's how i found the underground by accident

A fun platformer, but only a short demo. Graphics style is one-color outlined sprites in the foreground, kind of reminiscent of ZX Spectrum graphics, with colorful multi-layer parallax scrolling backgrounds. A very fun little hop-n-bop, if only it wasn't too short and too easy. Still, it's a good preview of what's to come.

I wish that the items would carry over from one play to the next. Sometimes you get new items and don't get a chance to experiment with them before the demo ends.
Also wish there was some indicators to tell what items you have. Some, like wands and bombs, show up in the item box. Others, like shrinking and beams and magnets, do not so you don't have any idea you have them except by observing their effects.

Question - is this game related to Super Knight Quest? Or is it just a similar game on the same engine? Other than background graphics they seem to be the same game, except that one seems technically superior - it has cannons and spike traps and moving platforms that this one does not have.

squidly responds:

This is the same game, just retitled with better graphics and a much improved engine.

We're running a Kickstarter, in the future we'll be releasing longer demos to the $30 that show more of the game (as it's completed) which you should check out.

Interesting design and fun gameplay. Actually miss that kind of game on quite a few platforms :)

well done.

i played through the demo, and i liked it, i love platformers to begin with !

The platforming feel feels good, the jumping is alright, although it feels like the gravity is just a little too low because it feels just a little too slow to land from a random jump to get up a platform, and the art style, it's unique to my knowledge, but the background doesn't really meld well with the constant neon NPC's, enemies and the player, i think looking at old NES games could give you an idea how to make enemies and players stand out more against a more detailed background, not even really, just something more simple and easy to look at. i like the enemies a lot, nice variety and i like the way the moving enemies are consistent and easy to remember, the boss is also nice, i'm not a great fan of gimmick bosses but it's allright.

The sword is nice, it's fast and responsive, as good as it can get.
the pet is okay, i called him cumquat, he reminded me of the color orange, his Attacks and the way he goes nuts is kinda cool because he's an ANIMAL ! but it's also bothersome at this point.
Jumping on enemies is just so much fun, i love it so much.
sometimes there's platform segments setup to act like a mario game, you go fast and you automatically killing stuff whilest you feel in controll, unlike a sonic game.

So in the end, i liked it, it's very promising, the only things that doesn't really sit with me is the graphic style/background, but i feel that's largely my problem.

(P.S. This is my personal opinion of the game, i mean not to tell anyone what to do, please remember no one can live your life but you, AKA my opinion doesn't have to matter, just want to put that out there, sorry.)

squidly responds:

Hey, thanks for the review! Yea the jumping has gone through a lot of revisions, but I think it's alright as it is right now. It may have a higher max speed though to help landing from high places.

If you want to see more of this game, please support it on Kickstarter!

The controls work well, but to me it feels more fun to just run fast and avoid enemies, as dealing with enemies just serves to slow momentum. Although that might just be my play style.

Also the music cuts off in some locations if you stay there long enough without dying.

Overall the game seems very promising, and I look forward to the finished product.

squidly responds:

This is completely intended, actually! We have an entire section talking about evasion and difficulty in our Kickstarter if you're interested :)
