Reviews for "Playing With Letters"

This was a very fun text based game. The riddles are easy, you just have to use your mind. I was happy to defeat this game all by myself and view the ending. Yes, I did get the secret ending. Not sure why so many other users are having trouble with it.

The medals work, and I earned them all.

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Well, I would expect nothing less from Newgrounds greatest, DoctorStrongbad.
Really? You got the secret ending by yourself? That sounds quite amazing. It seems that you've really taken the time to enjoy the atmospherical elements in the game then, hehhe.

It's good that the medals work. Using Stencyl, they usually work without issues.

Thanks for playing!

I found it interesting how many of the puzzles were really simple depending on what you were looking for. That's not to say that I didn't have any trouble in the first place. On the last puzzle, I actually knew the answer already, because it's usually around that point where the twist comes - my genre-savvy instincts kicked in at that moment - but I didn't put in the correct words, so I ended up loading the game in another tab to look for the necessary hints. I have to say that the secret ending was something I would never have looked for if I didn't know it existed. In a way, it's probably because I'm not trying to find anymore meaning than what's already fed to me.

Admittedly, the music was rather creepy, and it fit very well with the story. The way the text started to fade away after the correct answer was given was a really nice effect. For a small moment, you would think you hadn't typed in the correct answer when you really had. One thing that I really did find interesting was how all of the lines of text would travel all at once when you pressed the backspace button. It didn't give off a mechanical, yet lazy feel to it that an instant message display would. To me, that was just cool, and it was something I never saw before.

Anyway, this was a pretty pleasant experience, and I'm glad I got a chance to play this game. By the way, I don't suppose you're also a fan of the visual novel subgenre, too?

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

I've come to notice that the difficulty of the levels seem to depend on the midset of the player. For example, as Phonometrologist mentioned, the "Riddle Me This" one is pretty esay to figure out, as your thoughts will already be revolving around the subject in some way.

It would seem that you have a good sense for stories, as you saw the twist coming miles away XD
The entire game is built around that one thing, so I think it's natural that it would lead to such a point.

Yeah, the secret ending is really something pretty obscure. It can't be achieved by solving a puzzle, but is rather, an extra reward for unusually large curiosity. But, as curiosity can be shown in several ways, I decided to let people in on the secret. Afterall, only the people who really enjoyed the game will want to know the ending, so they deserve it.

This is a great review. It's rare that a review would mention the more programmer-ish aspects of the game, like how the text works. I think you're actually the second one out of 30 people to comment on this.
I figured that it might at first seem like the puzzle wasn't beaten even though the answer was correct. I think the split second of uncertainty can be a good thing. Perhaps not entirely alike those mini-heart attacks one gets when thinking for a split second that one has lost ones keys or something of the like.

As for how the backspace and enter buttons work, I had a weird time "programming them"
I am admittedly not that great when it comes to that aspect. I used Stencyl to make this game. However, I figured that this would be the easiest way for the text to work with the [backspace] button, so I "programmed" it to work like it does.

I do enjoy some visual novels. It's a shame that I haven't played Clannad, although I've watched the anime.
There are some good ones on Newgrounds as well. Right now, http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/652426 comes to mind.

Thanks for the awesome review, and for playing the game!!!

These are some really nice riddles. It took a while to get the hang of it, but once that was done, it worked out really well. The game really had a creepy atmosphere, and i'm not going to say anything about the ending, but you just have to play it. It's going to be worth it.

Just can't get that secret ending though. I have been trying for a while now, and I wanted to get a new account after losing my last one, just to be able to ask about it... :S
Amazing game! :D

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Great!

I'm glad you enjoyed the puzzles. I get that the first one is a bit tricky, as one isn't used to the concept yet.

As for the secret ending, I just edited the description. Now, everyone who has beaten the game should be able to get it by visiting the link and typing in the password (don't forget the space)! You can be the first one to try it out :D

It's a shame you lost your old account.
Thanks a lot for playing, making an account and for reviewing ;)

N. U. D. E? Nude? I spelled nude?

B. O. Y. Nude boy? Really?

Nude boy, hi? Well this is weird.

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Hahha, noooo XD Don't spell out spoilers with such big letters :p
But don't worry about it.
Weird it what I'm here for, baby ;)

Thanks for fanning up!!

Fun game!! Really curious about the secret ending now! :) Been trying lots of things, even seeing if I can see anything behind the Flash programming, but no avail so far... Care to let me in on the secret, please??

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Thanks!
The secret ending is probably not something you will fund by looking for it, which is pretty interesting I suppose.
Sure, I'll send you a PM :D
