Reviews for "Eye-Ball Shaun: Re-Envisioned"

Were you inspired by Oddworld at all? It kind of feels like a mix between Oddworld and Meatboy.

Fiercetempest92 responds:

Both Oddworld and Meatboy were major inspirations for this game in both design and gameplay.

This game is awesome! Fun gameplay, graphics, animation, and very original!

Absolutely amazing. Everything about his game from the visuals to the gameplay are excellent. Seriously, good job.

This is good game overall. Sharp graphics, nice character design. This music is somewhat unique, but I found it a bit grating. What I really like is that the controls are very solid. The movement is tight, Shaun doesn't slide all over the place (except for when he run-ducks, which is a good mechanism), the jump is easily controlled by how much pressure you put on the button and how you time the doubles. This is one of those games where I feel like the challenge comes from the level design and not poorly-executed controls. I actually feel like Shaun has the ability to make it through the obstacles.

Still, there are a few problems.

-Foremost, the control scheme is counter-intuitive. If "jump" is "A," "Pull" should not be "X". It's not a comfortable scheme on a standard QWERTY keyboard. Either "Pull " should be "S" or "Jump" should be "Z". There's really no reason to make the only two action keys at an awkward diagonal.

- The wall jump is a little glitchy. I lost waaaay too many lives because I happened to hit A while standing too close to a wall, and Shaun unexpectedly leaped backward into a blade. Other times, especially when I was trying to start a wall jump from a double jump, it didn't work at all. For normal jumps, it usually worked fine.

-Zone 3 was a little disappointing. The puzzles involving the tentacle beasts (which look and act a lot like Metroids...) mostly involve luck and guessing. This caused a lot of pointless deaths with little skill involved. The one level where you have to figure out how to out-maneuver the creature was far better.

-By Zone 4, I was rather bored of buzz saws and float mines. I eventually came to one challenge that seemed so unreasonable that I just quit.

-Which brings me to my last comment: Unless I missed something, there's no pause button! This isn't really acceptable in a game where some of the levels begin automatically (such as with Shaun on a moving platform). I hit one point where the phone rang, and I had no choice but to either play while I was trying to talk, let Shaun die 100 times, or quit.

-One more thing: when I hit the quit button, should the entire game terminate? Why can't the game record my position and start me where I left off?

That's a lot of bitching, but I do think this is a sound game with cool visuals and a cool main character. I'd like to see some different areas of the tower, maybe meet some other characters. Compared to a lot of the other platformers on Newgrounds, this one is very polished.

Fiercetempest92 responds:

Hi MysteryMadman, Thanks for your comments and criticisms! They are really appreciated.

although I would like to inform you that there is indeed a Pause button "Space Key" It tells you this during one of the Tutorial Rooms in the beginning. (I'm guessing you missed that but no biggie!)

I'll be sure to keep these pointers in mind for any updates and future projects!

good game
