Reviews for "Hard Ball"

Nice to be working with you! Great work finishing the game! :)

This game is fun. It has got certain unique aspects in it, that bring some light of hope to this game. But does it really shine in the end? Let's find out:

GAMEPLAY:

Hard Ball isn't your average "high-grade" flash/HTML5 game. It is a really simple platformer, where you need to get your colorful ball into the portal. This doesn't sound like much. That's why the creator was smart, and invented the Character Customization and Upgrades. Yes, this game has upgrades. And those upgrades are the feature, that makes this game stand out from the rest.
To buy these upgrades, you need to collect coins from the levels. First level gives you 5 coins for free, which allows you to buy one single upgrade for your ball. You can also spare the coins for later usage.
I myself made it to stage 8, and I can say, this game gets VERY unforgiving. Not only does it start you from the first stage every time, you die, but up to this part I really, REALLY hope, you've put your money to your HP and jump. Sure, having speed at level 3 is also useful, but the skill required for the later levels in this game is extreme. So don't expect mercy or some kind of help from this game after level 1.

MUSIC/FX:

The game uses various different songs made by other people. These songs actually fit to the game, giving it a refreshing feel of a kind. Only song, that I didn't like was the main theme, so I muted the game every time, I was on the main menu. I would've also liked to hear some FX in this game, since having only music playing on the background is not just enough.

BUGS/GLITCHES:

(As much, as I like this game, it has got some bugs. Others are annoying as hell, and others don't really bother me)
-Sometimes, the game plays as muted. This means, that no matter what you do, the music just won't play. To fix this bug, refresh the page a couple of times.
-There seems to be a small glitch with NG medals, that makes 'em appear twice on your screen (unlocked medal appears as unlocked again).
-The hitbox for the ball seems a little broken. Sometimes the spikes can hit you from unbelievably far away. I recommend fixing this bug.

OVERALL:

As I already said, Hard Ball looks and is a simple game. It has got some nice details such as the upgrades or the customizing, and the music is not too bad either. The unforgiving difficulty setting takes away one half of a star however, and so do the glitches. You have done good job with this game, and anyone reading this review, that I spent 30 minutes on, should totally play this game.

4 picos and 4 stars.

I enjoyed the game.

For the basic game that it is, it was rather fun. Had smooth movement, and some great tunes from the audio portal out to while playing. The addition of achievements also adds to the fun-factor of the game. They are not that hard to get, and can easily be gotten in 1-2 play through's.

Having the Health/Speed/Jump leveling abilities was a nice touch! It was a good feeling knowing you can take your hard work getting the coins, and reward yourself with a power.

The graphics are a little basic, and it could use I guess a little more excitement. Maybe besides the health/speed/jump, you could get a few single-use powers? Just a possible suggestion for next time.

Above all good job, and keep up the good work.

3/5

I see what you were going for here, but you're far from it (provided, of course, that I do see what you were going for here). The graphics need some work. They just look way too simple with about five colors on screen at a time. The controls should be changed to wasd and space bar instead of the arrow keys. The hit detection is bogus. I am clearly over a spike and I take take damage. There is a bug in level 2 where if you fall off the ledge to the far left, you won't be able to play the game. All those criticisms aside I did enjoy playing this game. I enjoyed half of the songs, although the audio would cut out at times for no particular reason and the transition from the game to the shop is just too abrupt (especially with the audio. But even though i enjoyed it, I can't give it any higher than 2 stars. The cons far outshine pros, but they can be easily fixed with a little work.

The environment is not very visually appealing but you will be too distracted by well designed and challenging levels to notice. Not a great game but it is a good one.
