Well that was grindy.

Base idea of game is solid. I also enjoyed graphics and story. Length of game is good(22 days i think). Multiple choices when choosing story might have annoyed some(as it causes missing part of story) but I liked it. Felt like choices I make matter. Adjusting difficulty was good property for this game. Boss fight was nice in a way that it brought difference in game.

Game play was horrible. Specialties took unknown amount of time to activate which made on-off regeneration of apples worse. It was never clear to me, when apples should be regenerating. For example, in middle point of boss fight regeneration of apples stopped, no reasoning in inside game logic. Annoyance of all odd behavior culminated in boss fight, which was inherently unfair(which, by itself is okay). Unfair battles would require, that they are actually winnable. At any point I didn't figure out what I was doing wrong, for example, one time, boss just ate all my guys, one by one. Only way I was able to beat it in the end was to halt my killing of boss until I could get enough apples in first part, (in part where apples were regenerating) and with voluntary difficulty decrease.

Also other odd things was that sometimes enemy just appears behind my lines.

Game never left me with a feeling when I lost, that how I could improve myself, I just lost, and would I want to decrease difficulty.

With designed unfairness there shouldn't be this kind of unknown. I actually would have liked unfair aspects of it, if game play was smooth. Just suddenly losing half of your guys, guys you used money to upgrade was unfairness. Boss one-shotting my villagers, trader suddenly not showing up when questioned, both are unfair elements. But those would have been very nice elements, IF rest of game play were smooth. Now it felt like laziness, which I'm pretty sure it wasn't.

Visible load bar for special abilities would give at least idea of how long will it take to activate it. If regeneration of apples was supposed to be randomly on/off, mention it. Digging feels completely off, there is no explanation of it, it shouldn't be just random, and if there was some method to gain better results with digging, that should be explained.

The story seems funny and the game is fun, but when the apple regeneration just stops, it makes this game hard. With only 200 apples from the beginning, I could only summon about 4 useful people and then they would just get annihilated. Is it suppose to only regenerate apples every now and then, or is it constant? You never know, which aggravates me because i can not save up apples to get summon new people which causes me to lose the game.
And as for the "slightly reduce difficulty" I see no changes. In fact, the zombies seem to be even faster and stronger. don't know if that is just me, but still. Only giving three stars because the two things i talked about each knock down a star. Maybe once bugs are fixed, this game would be good enough to go up to five stars.

If there's one thing the game does perfectly, it's how it conveys the feeling of desperation. Too bad it's not always for the best.

To start, defense games don't always have this amount of story involvement. The typical story rarely goes beyond 'the bad guys are coming, stop them!' In Last Town, however, you play the desperate town mayor and actively make decisions between levels ('days') that shape how the game will be played. Some outcomes are inevitable and feel a bit contrived, but it does add extra depth that is welcome in this game genre. And while the dialogue and jokes were nothing spectacular, it did lend a quirky quality and tone. The story is bleak, but it doesn't take itself too seriously.

I found the battles to be frustrating affairs. You can add characters to the battle map based on the amount of apples generated, and as you add characters the apple cost per character increases. This often puts you in a tough spot of either saving up for one stronger character with projectile weapons, or a couple weaker melee characters. But the apple regeneration is very slow and the enemies can overwhelm so quickly that by the time you realize it your defense has been decimated.

Also, the characters attack at an ungodly slow rate. If I wasn't playing this at work I'd be screaming at the screen. (I realize this is a fantasy game, but please, let's be realistic on this point).

A big problem is the way the icons in battle are displayed. The character costs (at the top of the screen) are not displayed until you put your cursor over them, and the costs frequently change as characters are killed. And the special attacks are placed at the bottom of the screen, and you acquire them without warning. This means you are continually scanning on the top of the screen to see if you can buy a character, or scanning the bottom of the screen in hopes a power-up has been acquired. So you spend very little time actually watching the battle take place. It adds to the desperate/frantic feel of the game, but it's unnecessarily time-consuming takes the focus away from the battle and any possible strategy.

The upgrade system is very extensive, so extensive that many upgrades will go untouched. There are upgrades that improve everyone's armor or HP, as well as individual upgrades and added abilities. Yet, I never got the feeling that I was too powerful for the advancing enemies. You really feel like you're barely keeping up. But in the end the gameplay mechanics forced me to only use a few characters if I wanted even a chance at making it through a level. Thus both strategy and creativity are thrown out the window.

I had to force myself to finish the game. It was frustrating. Poor little town...
