There are instructions when you type "help". Admittedly, it can be a lot of reading, but all the instructions are in there, I'm sure of that. If you did not see what you were typing, maybe the window lost focus and thus your typing did not get to the game? I'm not sure why else that would happen.

Thanks for taking your time to play it. There is not a classic tutorial, no, but the instructions on how to play are in there if you type "help". The "classic" tutorial in itself is an invention of modern games, originally you would just be thrown into the game without any help and would have to resort to the manual if need be. I can understand if this is not to your personal preference, but I prefer to figure out games myself (which I always do, there's no hurt in trying everything) and despise annoying tutorials.
