Reviews for "Y.O.L.O Explorer"

Interesting idea but it just ends up being so back in forth and then you just die. Maybe controlling with wasd and then using the mouse would be a nice.

CaffeineViking responds:

That was what I tried in the initial builds of the game, but it wasn't fun and
far too easy. By adding the shoot + move mechanic it added a great deal challenge
to the game.

This game is based a bit around rouge like elements, that once you die you die for good.
The thing that is missing is the replay ability like you said (it ends up being back and forth etc...),
if I had more time I would have spiced the game up with things that would have made it more fun
to retry the game.

Take Binding of Isaac for example, that game is great even if you die a lot. It's simply because it has a lot of replay ability.

Since the game was made 48 hours I won't judge things like graphics and sound. Just the concept and gameplay.
Using your laser as your movement system makes interesting skill based gameplay. Lasering rocks and moving are, by themselves easy, but when they are combined into the same mechanic it becomes a challenge.
I'd like to see some complexity added to the game though. Like different types/sizes of rocks and/or artifacts plus more complex levels (maybe cave systems?). Flying the ship is fun but the level surrounding needs to be fun to fly in.

CaffeineViking responds:

I completely agree with you! The things you pointed out are things that I wanted to add to the game but I needed to cut them in order to get a "full" game working in 48 hours. Thanks for taking your time to review!

This is one of those surprisingly good games. Clicking on it you don't expect much but you soon find yourself caught up in it and the clock soon reveals just how surprisingly long this game has held your attention. Addicting in its simplicity this game is quite enjoyable and not what I was expecting from the title. Better graphics and the option of sound effects and possibly music (preferably instrumental) would be improvements but even without them this game stands out quite well as a good game.

CaffeineViking responds:

Thanks a lot! Yes sound and music was something that I completely forgot to add,
after the game jam was done I realized I missed both of those. And yes I agree with you,
graphics do indeed suck :D I'm currently collaboration with an artist for my next game, so expect good graphics on my next game!
