Reviews for "Salem"

how to beat the 3th boss?

PLEASE... ONE MORE EPISODE OF THIS GAME! *_____________*!!
Best game on flash, EVER. if it was a game of PC i'll surely buy it!

Everything about this game is perfect, imo. The visuals, the soundtrack, the storyline, the gameplay. It all came together beautifully. The voice acting was also top notch; if the game had been silent, these voices would be the ones I imagined. Thank you for this amazing game. I'm looking forward to "Andover"!

One of the best games i played ever ! :) (PS : all my stars belong to this)

First off, the gameplay. While the gameplay does have the character feel 'slow,' movement speed wise. The feeling seems to be deliberate, as every single attack except two can be dodge, one by using your lantern quickly. The other is fairly obvious after the first time it appears, I also didn't experience any of the slowness or lag/glitches that the other reviewers seemed to experience, so I can't comment on that. Personally the boss fights felt fun, quick, etc. Meanwhile the areas between levels did seem to be more of a 'unofficial' tutorial more than filler, and developed the characters. Which is brilliant game design in and of itself as none of it intruded on the gameplay.
Now for the stuff that debatably matters, art-wise the game is extremely good, with every single platform being clearly visible when jumping becomes important along with positioning. As for the music; I am not a music expert, however I can tell that it fit, worked, and sounded great. As for the characters, the characters where flat out great as well, Sellie has a simple straight man melodramatic outlook on things, which contrasts nicely and turns Zippy into a great comedic character. With his withholding information and antics messing with Sellie adding a lot of character to the duo.
Especially Sellie's 'victory.' Overall, it helped to characterize them a great deal, as for the story. The story seemed to be in the background, though it seemed to be more 'character driven,' or a introduction to the characters, rather than a plot based epic. Which leads to the next part.
The game's only flaw wasn't so much a flaw, considering the stellar gameplay style of the game.
It was short. Really. Short.
The game's style overall favored boss rushes, the game would not be half as entertaining with the two types of enemies in long filler sections. Instead the filler sections where turned into character development and a way to teach a player mechanics, which was genius. And the gameplay focused on the bosses: which despite my want for this to have been longer with it's humor, and well done gameplay. I would prefer to have the good bosses already in the game, rather than having to fight twenty or so badly designed bosses. Overall the game was EXTRAORDINARILY good.
The only flaw I could think of is the overall shortness: and the lagginess/bugs/slowness others experienced. Which may have to do with their computer more than anything else: and nothing on you.
Overall, great game. It's extremely well done, and leaves me wishing for more...

Tarienn responds:

Thank you for that! This game took up a large portion of my life, and it's great to see a lot of thought and appreciation being given to it. I'm humbled by your opinion of our game. I would like to comment on the lag and sluggishness others have touched on. This stems from my inability as a programmer, and I hope to create better performing code in the future. This is just the way that Salem was built, I may revisit this game in the future to rebuild it with a better engine, but for now there's not much I can do until I learn more about how to develop games.
