Reviews for "Alight (in dreams)"

Awesome

So this is how it's like to lucid dream!

Good

This is certanly different from all the other games on Newgrounds. I like the game for going into a different route than most other games.

Really like the idea of the whole game taking place in a dream...but that's also kind of a problem here. The character just talks to himself as he goes through a series of floating platforms with deserted houses and buildings. It is rather boring considering this is a dream. You could have easily build in some more character interaction like him talking to his mother again or him going through some sort of nightmare or fear he had as a child. A simple drawing instead of jus text that explains what happened could have been enough. Or recreate some scenes from his past. Would've been much better instead of having that pointless "go back to the part you were just in" with the black walls and crows.

The story, even though it is really predictable, kept me playing through because it kind of interested me what the character had to go through. But it kinda felt dragged on after a while. For something as simple as SPOILERTHEMOTHERDIEDSPOILEREND it really shouldn't take 8 levels to tell that. Or if it does then go through other topics of the characters life more indepth. Like for example, I don't know if I missed a text bubble but why did he never feel like home anywhere?

I like the calm music, I thought it would get boring pretty fast but for some reason it really didn't. It really had the atmosphere of pleasant dreams in it and for that I respect it.

I already mentioned the dull settings but a bit more things in the background would've been nice like butterflies floating on the platforms or other background activities to give it more life. Like different items to pick up that tell more of the story. Every series of platfroms is just...well, just another series of platforms with nothing special or particular whatsoever.

What annoyed me the most with the gameplay is that there's no separate button for jumping and gliding. I always had to remind myself NOT to let go of the up button otherwise I would waste another jump. This could've been easily fixed when the up key would only glide and space would only jump. Also I don't understand why the initial jump from the ground uses up your midair jumps.

What I noticed too is that the birds are a bit too fast. Often I wait for them to come to me so I can safely let myself fall into them but then they make a sharp curve and I can't catch up with them. This happens mostly in the middle part of the game.

You should have also laid out the "Deadzones" a bit more careful. When you miss a platform it often takes a pretty long time till you hit the deadzone. Also I noticed that some parts in the return sections are missing tiles for some reason.

All in all a decent fan game. I'll give you 7 stars for story, music and idea. Rework the controls , think of a better story to tell and lay out a good level setting and you're on the right way.

"sob"

so sad but nice animation.

Not bad.

Not great, and, given how many games have similar plots, that's just not good enough. The mechanics were kinda cool, but that's the only redeeming feature.
The background music was bland, and the artwork has, like the plot, is familiar.
I feel like, while it was interesting enough for me not to quit, it wasn't really worth the time invested after I finished.

@321fail

Well I argee. the storyline was kind of predictable, but it's still a good story, and it was well made. I think it deserves a 8, but since I LOVE this game, I give it a 10.
