A bit reminiscent of 'command school'
I have been playing this game on your website, and although I did not think I would like it initially, I've found myself drawn in for several days now. I don't think it is overly complex at all, as the manual explains everything, and the item system can be figured after at most 5 minutes of gameplay.
The music is excellent, but it wouldn't hurt to have at least one other track other than the general ambience, especially for the battle scenes. The battles themselves actually require an element of strategy, considering that the four-ship fleet the player commands through the game is soon outnumbered (and seemingly outgunned) in almost every engagement after the first few sectors. But in such situations (especially against the later pirates and the Caes'Cix), careful thought and a bit of luck usually wins the day.
I did notice one glitch (that favours the player, however). When one reaches the level to upgrade the ships to a second class, it is possible to upgrade 3 out of the four multiple times to the maximum. After one has selected the ship to be upgraded and the upgrade itself, if one switches to another, already upgraded ship without closing the upgrade screen, one can get another, premature upgrade for that ship.
I did not like that the store did not restock consumable items unless one saves, quits, and restores the savegame--my fleet has always been a bit short on batteries (S, M, and L sizes) since the 12th sector. Also, I would have liked a few more ship colours to be available--or perhaps to have a colour slider, allowing for blended colours. I was a bit disappointed that I didn't see an Imperial grey/white or black available for ship colours. I did like however that the ship names were from a selection, and not user-input; it can be pretty hard at times to come up with a good, original name.
