Reviews for "Seeing Spots"

Very nice indeed

So this was really nice and has some strong video game sound to it would be nice to have an intense build up in this, so nice job here this was a good track here and I do hope you can make more of this kind of stuff here anyways nice work indeed.

~~SUGGESTED IDEAS~~
another one with no changes other then more build up.

~X~

Hey! Sorry for taking so long to review this. With piano lessons, the NGADM, music work, and other reviewing to do, it was tough to find the time, but I finally got round to it!

This has some pretty good qualities! First off, I can tell you worked on the mixing/mastering because the production in this track is quite clean. For a track like this I would've liked a stronger bass, and maybe an even harder-hitting kick, but what you have right now is airy and pleasant to the ears, so good job in that department. The piano in this track is lovely. Overall there are some pretty good ideas, and a nice amount of variety to boot.

Now, the main issue is the wow factor in this track. Unfortunately it's a bit uninteresting, and doesn't stand out among other house tracks as much as I would've liked it to. A lot of the sounds you used are cheesy/generic, especially that hypersaw, so a good place to start is being more creative with your sounds. This could mean looking into synthesis and making your own sounds, or investing in some new VSTs (I'd recommend Omnisphere but then again I recommend Omnisphere to everyone; I love it to bits. Shame it's very expensive though).

Another issue is that the composition is bad. So while you have nice production and some good ideas (like that ending; what a nice way to end the track), the melodic department is lacking. This is unfortunately not something I can give you constructive criticism about because to this day I don't know how to explain what makes a melody good, but all I can say is that with a bit more experience you'll be able to make great melodies to complement your good ideas and production.

Hope that helped, good luck with your future tracks!

Dylnmatrix responds:

Thanks so much for the review Step. This actually helps a lot and I feel better about not getting into the NGADM this year.

Strong kicks and basses are a weak point for me. I'm still learning how to EQ and properly compress everything, and I still use a lot of presets. But I'll work on making that better.

With this being an experiment in House, I was a little afraid to make my own sounds for it, so I used the generic ones, just so it would sound more house-y to me. I'm sure that if I continue working at house music, I'm sure I'll get better at it, but I tend to stick to my Trance.

It's a shame you thought the composition was bad, but I guess I didn't focus on the melodies in this as much as I do in my trance tracks. Probably because I was so afraid to step outside the boundaries of house when I was writing this, and I don't hear much house music with amazing melodies like Trance or Complextro.

I really appreciate this Step. This is going to help me a ton if I decide to try House again, and in my other tracks as well. Thanks.

Good. I like the synths you used and the fact that there was a certain degree of variability that is lacking in many house tracks. It didn't call my attention as something particularly unique and original, though, but I tend to be somewhat nitpicky about that.

Dylnmatrix responds:

Thanks for the review and my apologies for the late reply.

I'm glad you liked the track for the most part, but I am a bit confused on how it doesn't sound unique to me, because I don't know many artists that use my type of melody. Or was it that I used a similar progression of parts that most house tracks do? If that's so, then I'm not really surprised, as this was only an attempt at making house music and I really hadn't done it before. (Edit: Never mind, I figured out what you meant.)

I really loved the filter sweeped electric piano that becomes pronounced at 0:50. As that progresses to the part with the saw you could try widening the stereo output, or even ping pong the two channels a little bit (not much tho, house and elctro house are still very mono EDM styles).

2:58 was an excellent hook into the rest of the song. I can tell that you really dig EDM music and want to learn more about production. I'm still the same way after producing for 7 years =P

In a nutshell, I really liked the track. It's hard to make happy, hopeful music. If you're ever down to collaborate I'd be stoked.

Dylnmatrix responds:

A review from a month ago...ouch. So sorry about the late reply.

Thanks wulf, I'm glad you liked it! I really appreciate the review and I appreciate the incite into stereo widening. I'll definitely take a look into it, and see if I have something to help me with that :) It was also nice to hear from you again, the advice you gave me about Zoltage was a huge help to my production skills.

And I'd love to do a collab with you sometime. I'll send you a PM next time I actually have time, as I might have some good ideas down that we could work with by then. Or feel free to send me a PM, if you have some ideas of your own.

I like the melody at the beginning. This piece is nice and climactic. I like the beat and instruments, even though I think I recognize a couple from your other tracks. I wish it progressed a little faster in the beginning, and around 1:38 too, but once it hit 2:42, the blissful mood and engrossing melody took control! ^^ Excellent structure and really smooth transitions as usual! 3:57 was a cool breakdown, too. I like the ending a lot as well. Once again, a fabulous job, Matt! I can't wait for more! :D

Dylnmatrix responds:

Thanks man. I'm still learning how House music works, especially in the intros. Also, about the similar instruments, I felt like they fit the feel of what I wanted the most, but other than that, the other synths were hand made by me or altered by me for the song.

But thanks for the review, hopefully I'll be able to get another song done here soon!
