Reviews for "The Legend of Newgrounds"

Good idea, bad gameplay

It was really aggrivating to play, since they turned invincable after you hit them. How are you supposed to defend yourself? And when you got hit, you got knocked into a another screen if you were too close to the end, which confused me occassionally.
Not a bad idea, by any means, but its execution... eh... not so much.

Thanks for reviewing.

Good bosses, lame minions

It was fun to see how the Newgrounds crew translated into Legend of Zelda style bosses. The music was ranged from ok to good; the boss music was the best.

The Newgrounds rank determining your HP was a good idea, but the chests were all hidden in the beginning area. You could only hold one key at a time to use it on the next door you were *supposed* to open - thus, dungeon exploration is linear and quickly becomes tedious.

The graphics were pretty good, but there just wasn't enough variety. I can excuse common LoZ stuff like identical trees, fences, doors, chests, and keys, but what's up with there being only two kinds of (non-boss) enemies? They even have the same attack pattern - the only difference is one takes 2 hits ad the other takes 3. This would have been acceptable if these enemies were the only two kinds in a particular area, but they're the only ones in the whole friggen game. Add to this the fact that they become invunerable after you hit them and stay that way for a few seconds longer than it takes to come back to you, and I guarantee that you will be sick of these enemies by the time you get to the third dungeon, if not before.

You have to navigate the Audio Portal, the Flash Portal, and the BBS on your way to King Tom's castle. This sounds cool, but it's really just Generic Dungeon #1, 2, and 3 with themed bosses. It would have been nice to have the dungeons either have visual or audio variations so I could tell the difference.

Overall, an OK game. However, it would have been better to compare this to the original LoZ rather than Link to the Past, as the gameplay and dungeon design are rather one-dimentional.

ShirkDeio responds:

Yeah, you're right. This being by first tile-based game, I couldn't believe how incredibly long it took to design dungeons. These "generic dungeons" (and I totally agree with that) took at the least an hour each to design, on top of the several hours of programming it took to actually program the engine for the dungeons (keys, trap doors, etc).

It's just a huge undertaking to make a game like this, and I mis-calculated the time needed to finish it by Pico Day. If and when I make another tile-based game, I will spend more time on the engine and level design.

thast rediculas

that whole invisible thing is just incomprehensibly stupid, makes no sense, and if it was in the style of Zelda then it wouldn't have that at all! its completely stupid!! it may be a great game without it buts its just freakin ridiculous!! basically, when u hit an enemy they turn "invincible" for a short period of time, but they can hit u in that time, when they are invincible, letting u be basically hit by a ghost, its completely stupid and ruins the entire game.

the funny thing is, uve actually down sized the amount of time they're invinsable, and even more hilarious, is that u know its a problem, yet u dont fix it properly... why don't u (the authors) play the game yourself? 5 for graphics and sounds... ALL its got

ShirkDeio responds:

On the contrary, I played and beat the game before submitting it.

Coulda been good, but stops being fun quick

I liked the idea but honestly the combat just wasnt fun at all. And the invincible time is completely ridiculous. Considering the blowback from hitting or getting hit, it wasn't even necessary. And the music also gets kinda old. Just not as fun as it should be.

ShirkDeio responds:

Thanks for reviewing. The stupid invincibility thing is because of lag, I think I've fixed it though.

couple of nicks....

sweet game, i notice some of the audio is remixed legeond of zelda musiic :)
i find it annoying that you hit an enimy, and they become invincable and you have to retreat. takes a while to adjust to that.

ShirkDeio responds:

Try it now, I cut the invincibility time down by like 10 times.
