Good bosses, lame minions
It was fun to see how the Newgrounds crew translated into Legend of Zelda style bosses. The music was ranged from ok to good; the boss music was the best.
The Newgrounds rank determining your HP was a good idea, but the chests were all hidden in the beginning area. You could only hold one key at a time to use it on the next door you were *supposed* to open - thus, dungeon exploration is linear and quickly becomes tedious.
The graphics were pretty good, but there just wasn't enough variety. I can excuse common LoZ stuff like identical trees, fences, doors, chests, and keys, but what's up with there being only two kinds of (non-boss) enemies? They even have the same attack pattern - the only difference is one takes 2 hits ad the other takes 3. This would have been acceptable if these enemies were the only two kinds in a particular area, but they're the only ones in the whole friggen game. Add to this the fact that they become invunerable after you hit them and stay that way for a few seconds longer than it takes to come back to you, and I guarantee that you will be sick of these enemies by the time you get to the third dungeon, if not before.
You have to navigate the Audio Portal, the Flash Portal, and the BBS on your way to King Tom's castle. This sounds cool, but it's really just Generic Dungeon #1, 2, and 3 with themed bosses. It would have been nice to have the dungeons either have visual or audio variations so I could tell the difference.
Overall, an OK game. However, it would have been better to compare this to the original LoZ rather than Link to the Past, as the gameplay and dungeon design are rather one-dimentional.
