This almost looks like those alien ships from outer space in that movie with Tom Cruise. The aliens were from outer space but their ships were underground or left there for their return. Anyone remember that movie's name?

Small precision for those who recognise it without remembering it :
This is the martian tripod from "world of the war". This is the same name for the movie with Tom Cruise.
The alien come from Mars, more precisely (so, this art IS those machine in the movie), and they come to earth before we live here and built these machines underground. Then, they teleport themselves into their tripodes (the lightening before the alien attack) to take our blood (cause they love human blood).
In the orginal story (from the end of XIXth century), this was a need for martians to go to earth because their planet were dying. Maybe in the movie, they predicted that problem long time ago, but in the original story, they just built huge luncher to lunch capsules towards earth. This was not predicted. But overall, in both cases, they did not try to be friend with us.

It is indeed a Martian Tripod from War of the Worlds. However, not the version from the Tom Cruise movie exactly. My inspiration came from several older versions.
I really fell in love with War of the Worlds as a kid in the 80's (see the updates to the Author Comments) and this is how I have grown to imagine those martian war machines.
