Reviews for "Nocturnal Letters (sized)"

LOVED IT! MADE ME JUMP OCCASHIONLY!

Ms-Bowser responds:

Thank you very much! :3 x3

I absolutely love the atmosphere and the story was very well done for another Newgrounds flash game. I never would figure a single flash game would provide this much entertainment.

The photos themselves could use more quality, but at the same time I like the grainy feel in the game.

Good job. (:

Ms-Bowser responds:

Thanks a lot! It's very nice to hear that it was entertaining and that you liked the story :)

More atmospheric than most flash horror dreams

My brother recently introduced me to a series of mildly humorous youtube commentaries, one of which introduced me to Nocturnal Letters. I'm sure a lot of people have come through after seeing it played with people talking over the story, simply downvoting because they can, so let me say my piece.

Nocturnal Letters is scary.

Really scary. And not in a way that needs to jump out and grab you by the throat, but a way that quietly plants itself in the back of your mind. There are no monsters, no enemies - just you, your family, a house - and a plot that revolves around the devolution of normalcy into something frighteningly implausible - but just possible enough to leave a mark.

Maybe it's just me, but the things that frighten me most are the things that seem possible - can be possible. Several of the scenes in Nocturnal Letters prey off these fears; fears of lingering madness, of mistaking one thing for another, of an otherwise normal scene unfolding in a surreal and dreamlike manner. I do not wish to spoil it for those who haven't played, but to experience Nocturnal Letters on your own will leave you with serious thoughts about your own ability to perceive reality. Just too bad it doesn't have a sequel. :)

The only reason I can't give this a ten is that it isn't for everyone; there are people who will go in with their perceptions already decided for them by others, and there are people who won't think about the things they experience; you might enjoy Condemned or F.E.A.R more than this. For those who enjoy classic Resident Evil and SH, or Amiga/PC horror point and clicks - I think you'll find this an easy ten. Please give it a try, and don't let others decide your opinion for you. Just do me a favor - don't play it alone at night -

;)

Ms-Bowser responds:

Thank you very much for this sincere and clever review! :)
The way you describe it..it's exactly the way I wanted it to be, what I wanted to accomplish with it.
Maybe you understand me really well..? ^__^

Great game.

I really enjoyed your game. The cons others have with it, are pros for me.

+ Graphics~ I know the images were taken with a webcam & then compressed once the game was uploaded. They are grainy & pixelated. Sometimes it is hard to see what is what. I enjoy this aspect as strange as it sounds. Although not an artistic choice(?), it really adds to the atmosphere of your game. :) I love old chunky, clunky pixelated Horror games so I know I'm in the minority but still.

+Sound~ I really love the songs you chose to use, as well as the sounds. I also noticed you edited many of them to suit your game. The songs you used and where you used them were great. I saved the songs to my MP3 player & I can't stop associating them with your game now. I titled the album tag for them "Nocturnal letters" so I could find them all easily. xD

+Story~ I can tell you put effort into it. Though I'm a Horror fan, like every genre there are cliches and you managed to avoid the prominent ones. It makes your plot refreshing. Though I'd consider myself "jaded", I didn't expect your ending at all either.

In any case, I also wanted to tell you that wherever you live is beautiful. It's ideal for many Horror scenarios because of how secluded it seems. Thanks for making an interesting game!! :3

Ms-Bowser responds:

Thank you so much! :D

Well, the graphics was mostly just a problem that needed solving. But I suppose it ended up looking interesting, but very unclear.. I also love old games x)

Yay! The sound and story was what I put most effort into. It's SO important with good sounds and music for horror games.. I found really amazing stuff here on newgrounds :D
Oooh, someone has the soundtrack of my game on their MP3.. ^w^ I always do that with games I like, so it makes me really happy someone has done the same thing.

Unfortunately, my family don't live in that house anymore ;,,( It's being rebuilt as well..
Gotta buy a secluded old house of my own someday :D

Awesome

I love it!!!I don't care about graphics as long as the game is challenging and fun.I didn't use the walkthrough on my first try until i got to the ghosts (which scared thee hell outta me) 10/10!!!!

Ms-Bowser responds:

Wow, thank you! :D

I'm so happy that I managed to scare you ;)
