1.If you look carfully, you will see a koopa shell hitting mario, it's very hard to see.
2. Bowser has the ability to make the mushroom effect. But he only gives that power to his loyal koopa, if he gave it to every koopa, he would have been squashed by now.
What was the end about?
How did the turtle stop mario? He just seemed to freeze for some reason. :-/

The turtle was travelling really fast!
That's why mario just froze like that.
