I don't know the guy, I don't like metallica, but that piece is freakin' awesome!
From what you've said that style of art is incredibly tedious, painful and difficult, (Well, at least it would probably beat my limited patience, I mean, I'm too lazy to shade my art) but that is great. The detail around the eye is amazing, you've made everything look real while keeping a slightly abstract look too.
