Reviews for "HotFish-SameButDifferent"

that was really great

that was a really great animation it meant so much you know? That looks great for an intro animation I really hope to see more of your work soon ^-^

Simply Beautiful.

This flash is a classic in my eyes. I love every aspect of it, but then, I feel that way about all your work. If I'm not mistaken, there's a book that you've had published (according to your website). If that's true, congradulations! I wish I could read Korean then I'd try to buy it! Regardless, this is beautiful. Your animation, simple yet stunning. And the music... wow. Wonderful choice. Please make more flashes.

One word.... wow....

Wow....

This is the most beautiful animation I've seen yet! I almost cried.... This is one of THE BEST I've seen!!!!!! Nice fluid animation. Great song for this...it added to the mood of how different things are in thier own special way.

I hope you can make more animations much like this and your previous one, "There she is!!"

This is beautiful.... I loved it!

moving, satisfying, left me wanting more

I just cant stop watching this amazing piece of art. Based on what little I know about Korea, I will put forth a few random thoughts about what I understand, and perhaps it will help others appreciate Hot Fish more.

First we have to understand that this is a flash introduction/advertisement of a printed book. It is not intended to present the whole story, or even an abreviated version of it, but simply to give us a taste of its flavor and message.

Most of the korean to english translation is very bad, and I will offer my interpretation of the text.

The pre-load quote from the book, while certainly flavorful (and ironicly is the best korean to english translation in the whole flash), is completely out of context and makes no sense. *ignore*

scene 1: boy and girl walking with fish bread.
You know what? what? In the whole world there are no two fish bread shaped exactly the same.
Hurry up!... and we wish they would hurry up a little through the next part with all the fish animation and credits (ah but we are impatient Americans, some of us).
One thing that sets Sambakza apart is the way they perfectly match and time the animation to the music. Admire this as you wait for scene 2.

scene 2: SAT scores and alley
In korea (other asian countries as well) high school is not like it is in the US. It is very very tough. Thier version of the SAT is a great deal harder, and is sooo important in determining what future opportunities the student will have, and to what degree they will be sucessful in life. From her reaction, we may infer that the girl did not score very highly, or not as highly as she hoped.
Juxtaposed with this story, we are shown a fantasy image of bunnies looking at the moon, and also desks facing a blackboard. Cleary the author is trying to establish a parallel here, but it is not too clear to me. Perhaps the light from the moon (that does not shine equally) is meant to stand for intellect, which also does not shine equally on all students.
In the alley, she cries. Her friend tries to console her with fish bread and a soda. Being somewhat consoled by his kindness, they walk on together, and we are give another view of scene 1. Hurry up!

scene 3: the cat's realization
I always thought that life was only about being one step ahead of the next guy, or else risk ending up two steps behind him.
Notice that in the first part of this scene, the rest of the cats walking with him are only outlines, signifying that the cat does not see others as individuals, nor himself as one either, but only just another cat among millions, lost in the shuffle.
We are shown some images that bolster this idea; apartment buildings where every unit is indentical etc. Then another fish bread reference and quote from the book.
Look, Dun' (presumably the girl's name). At first glance they all look identical, yet if you look closer each one is individual as each person.
ok, back to the cat. and here we see him have his revelation: each of my fellow cats is not just a carbon copy of the last, but each is different and unique. and as he realizes this, smiling, the animation turns each cat from just an outline into a more detailed version, showing how each one is special and unique. we even get a little hummor for those of us that have seen "there she is" lol.

scene 4: back to the bunnies

one of the bunnies (a girl bunny, and probably meant to represent Dun') appears to realize the same thing, and we infer that the boy's words about the fish bread have helped her realize that she is special and unique.

Every person is made from the same stuff, and comes into the world in the same way, and on the surface many of us look alike, yet the truth is we are all unique and special in small ways, and that is what makes us all special collectively as a species.

Truely a profound work, imho.

Those fish-shaped pastries rock.

Soooo tasty...

Overall, lovely movie, with a lovely message. I wasn't too fond of the songs though. It probably would have made more sense if there was a translation of the lyrics.

I'm so going to go eat one of those fish things now, one with cream filling. Those rock.
