What kind of technique were you trying out?

Typically I put the flat colours in, add shadows, tone, then lighting effects and clean it all up.

This time however I started with the darkest colour first (the colour of the face in shadow) then slowly added more and more light, kind of like building it up from a dark silhouette to how it looks now. Quite a useful way to do it, if you understand what is going to be lit you know what goes where and don't spend too much time trying to perfect it.
