Today marks the day that the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft drops off a very special delivery to Earth! In late 2020, the probe collected a significant amount of rocky goodness from an asteroid called Bennu. Storing it securely inside a small capsule, it returned to Earth and delivered this invaluable scientific gift, parachuting to safety in Utah's West Desert.
After the drop-off is complete OSIRIS-REx will then fly to another asteroid called Apophis to study it in detail! The spacecraft's name will also be updated from OSIRIS-REX to OSIRIS-APEX ('APophis EXplorer').
It's the gift that keeps on giving!
