Tiles in progress

Play as both player and level in this short puzzle game.

This game was made in 48 hrs for the GMTK 2023 game jam and has since received further refinement.

The objective of the game is to get the player to the chest.

This can be done in two ways, move the player to the chest or move the level.

Use the Icon buttons at the side to choose how you move. Use the swap icon at the top to swap between controlling the player and the level.

The available options are shown on the right and are randomly chosen the next card is shown in the top right corner. If ever three are the same, they are all replaced.

The current role being controlled is indicated by the background (green->player, blue->level).

I like the idea behind the gameplay! I wish the randomness of the buttons was more controlled, however. Maybe instead of having to wait to switch control between the character and the level, the player could do it themselves, thus adding a bit more strategy to it? The rest of it is pretty solid, though!

So if the background color is green, you control the player.
If it's blue, you control the board.

I understood that but to the others I can't tell... mainly because there's a lack of information an instructions page.

The game is a WIP, so I guess not saving a person's progress is part of that. In other words, game does not save your progress.

interesting idea. something is missing to make we want to go beyond level 2. maybe it is too random

This is a pretty cool idea, and I like the visual style as well.

I can't tell if the symbol selection is completely random or if it's somehow ensured there's a fair balance, since often I feel like I'm simply moving back and forth between the same symbols and I can't really be “clever” and do the right thing, I have to also be “lucky”.
At least you have three symbols to choose from, so there is room for some strategy.

I didn't get to the end because the “Levels” button seemed like a level selection (I wanted to check how many there are) but instead it throws you back to the title screen and you have to start over.

Good luck in the jam!
