Description:

Train Journey is a 16-cartridge PICO-8 game (the maximum size) about a mysterious train to which the player is seemingly bound. Travel between stops, meet unique characters, and learn their stories. Can you free yourself and return home? Or will you ride the train forever...?


Controls:

[Z/C]: Jump

[X/V]: Use Shooty (an unlockable item)

Enter: Pause

Left & Right Arrow Keys: Movement

Up Arrow Key: Interact & Shooty Up

Down Arrow Key+[X/V]: Use Shovel

The game is also compatible with most controllers.


Most text can be skipped if you hold down [X/V] which may be useful when reattempting a boss or something

Notes:

The Lexaloffle BBS in-browser and the download on itch.io seem to have been much more reliable as far as preserving save data.


Due to the way I used PICO-8 to make this game, and as a result of the level layout, you are unable to save in any "train stop" level. The game can only be saved in the train (when the screen flashes "game saved"). Note that the candle checkpoints are only checkpoints! You will not start at the checkpoint if you restart the game, so I'd recommend playing one level at a time, when you have the time to beat a whole level in a single sitting.


Note that there may be some bugs still left in, so please let me know if you spot any!

Release 1.6: Final Update Most Likely

Hey there! Here's a big update for the game! Most of it is behind-the-scenes changes and tweaks but there are some overt changes as well. The Spanish version is also now available on itch: https://meivuu.itch.io/travesia-en-tren (Thanks to Pablo Blanco de la Haza for translating everything)

  • Tweaked graphics in several areas
  • Modified and added some small pieces of text in various places
  • Made minor level design modifications across the whole game
  • Changed each boss with the exception of the third to use a fixed attack pattern, instead of fully random
  • Changed the king's name
  • Modified some level dynamics in level 4 with a "warp tunnel" to mitigate the tedium of that level
  • Fixed a handful of softlocks
  • Where two pushable pots could get stuck together in the first level
  • Where the game would be stuck if a late-game boss is beaten while it had an upwards velocity
  • Slightly changed the dynamic of the first section of the secret ending for the sake of increased challenge
  • Replaced the challenge to obtain the 5th watch piece
  • Fully redesigned the second section of the secret ending
  • Made the secret final boss less vague in communicating battle info to the player
  • Made certain portions of text unskippable because players tend to spam the shoot button which is also the "advance text" button
  • Expanded the credits
  • Added the ability for the player to choose their ending if they qualify for the good ending, after the first "final" boss
  • Added a couple small easter eggs that respond to certain actions/exploits
  • Make the player and the first "final" boss slide away from each other at the end of the battle so that one doesn't obscure the other
  • Added a proper title logo for the title screen

Bugs

  • Allow the player to pogo jump after falling even if they hadn't jumped before falling
  • Fixed a memory leak caused in level 4 while text boxes are open
  • Fixed a slowdown issue in boss 2
  • Fixed flicker bug with the "flik" stone block enemies from level 2.

Oh no! There's a known soft lock there that is fixed in an update I'm working on. I think one of the trailers shows a solution though so you could check that out!

I'm giving it 2, despite initially liking it so much.
No checkpoints, intentional hazards that force you to die and then repeat from the last checkpoint.
Yeah, this is like the dark souls of platformers.

this game is fucking amazing. honestly, the fact that this game doesnt have more views or plays is pissing me off. this is one of the games on newgrounds that actually feels like a full game. you get to play for hours on this game figuring out puzzles, dodging enemys, its amazing. i hope another game like this comes out. keep making this awesome stuff king!

train lore

This games is pretty cool. Trains are good :) When the train stopped in level 1, I got chills. I wish one of my friends could make cool stuff like this!
