A game about the fundamental particles of computer screens.

Subpixel was made for Newgrounds' Pixel Day 2023. It is a very experimental platformer that features a colorful onebit-inspired artstyle.

How to Play

  • WASD/Arrow keys = Move/Select
  • Space/W/Up = Jump
  • Esc/P = Pause
  • Back = Exit

In normal downward gravity, you move with A and D, or Left and Right arrow keys. But when gravity changes, so does your movement controls. In sideways gravity, you instead move with W and S, or Up and Down arrow. Space is always jump, but you can also jump with whatever direction key is opposite gravity.

Sometimes you have to use your momentum, jump at different angles, or from different positions. In this example, I undershoot my jump a little so I cross over to downward gravity with more speed, and hold Right while I do. Every scene may require a little... experimentation.

If you ever get stuck, you can respawn yourself from the pause menu. The game also saves your progress at almost every scene, so you can reload the tab if you need to.

How I made Subpixel - January 24, 2023

Known bugs

  • It's still rarely possible to clip through tiles while transitioning from one scene to another
  • Sometimes shooting stars appear over the ground

Changelog

v1.0.1

  • Fixed a bug where the player would sometimes face the wrong way after entering a scene or a different direction of gravity
  • Fixed a bug where the player would sometimes get stuck on the corners of tiles where gravity changes and pulls them towards the tile; those tiles are now just moved a little (you can still do this, though)
  • Fixed a bug where some galaxies were cut off by spike tiles; now those galaxies are just hidden
  • Fixed a bug where the player could skip one of the last scenes by entering it from the bottom corner of the previous scene
  • Fixed a bug where, if the game was loaded with the save point at the ending, it would set the save point to the start of the game
  • The game intro is now shown in subpixel art style after beating the game

Can't even start!!!!!

this game is a mindfuck. holy shit. its really good though

Nice!

The gameplay mechanic of dying because of invisible level elements you can't possibly predict is suitable for a short subsegment of a game, but not an entire game

I like the concept, but it's really confusing in terms of understanding.
