IMPORTANT: Boss fight is bugged and he'll be unkillable if you take damage during the fight. Play the latest version for the bugfix: https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/868828

Welcome to Pouchie's game! He's excited to play the game and have fun. This game demo features one full level with coins to collect, enemies to squash, and a building to reach in order to end the game. All game assets are custom made as a call-back to classic platformer games, while also keeping a black and white aesthetic, which matches Pouchie's theme (pronounced P-oo-ch-ee), as he was originally inspired by the old Black and White cartoons, popularized by Fleischer Studios and that other one.

Hopefully you enjoy this small project of mine!

What's new:

  • NEW MOB! Blobber is the new main overworld mob. It has the same functionality as the Bootstrappers from the early versions, with a twist! There are dark and light Blobbers. While the dark Blobbers will turn around near cliffs, the light Blobbers will just keep going. So watch out for falling blobs!

  • NEW MOB! Bobos are annoying birds that fly around the map, starting with level 2. The always fly in specific patterns.

  • MOB UPDATE! Bootstrappers now jump around instead of walk around

  • BOSS UPDATE! Boomer now runs faster after hearing feedback that he was "too easy."

  • NEW LEVEL! There's now World 2, which introduces both the Bobo mob, as well as ladders.

  • NEW ITEM! Om Nom Cat Food. Eating this food will restore one heart of Pouchie's health.

Bugfixes:

  • You can now slowly exit out of slow-fall mode when at a wall.

  • Pouchie's health will no longer show full health when killed by a mob.

  • Mobs can no longer be killed by Pouchie during his death animation.

Known issues:

  • There was feedback in the previous build that gameplay was "too floaty" and "too robotic." As both people who mentioned that failed to elaborate on what was the exact issue, I was unable to fix that specific issue.

  • Bobo's hit box and attack box are too close together, which can result in players getting hurt when they shouldn't.

  • Pouchie's collision shape is a single pill-shaped collision, making him slide off of edges too easily.

  • Bobo's design is too similar to the old version of Pidgey from Pokémon Red, Blue, and Green. These textures are placeholders until I can design something more original.

It's coming along rlly nicely! Just a few things of note:
- bobo hit boxes are slightly off
- the small jump hitting the wrong side / getting hit by an enemy causes is slightly too large and tossed me to my death a few times, mostly on the bobo's, but I know we could easily fix that up.

Also I wanna help u fix up the bobo sprite so its not too much more detailed than the other enemies if u don't mind! Aside from that it's coming along good and I will have fun working on this with u! :DDDDD

Thank you!!! And absolutely feel free to make your own version of Bobo!

i drop my big mac again :(

Pretty fun just the walk speed is not the best

love this so much!!!! it's becoming one of my favorite up and coming games on newgrounds. i still think its a little too easy with the boss fight and all. but i LOVE it!!!

BIG step of improvement. I've been following this game since the previous version, and I'd like to give some genuine critique.
First, the pros.

- The wall jump mechanic is very much appreciated. I was able to get the hidden away coins a lot easier.
- The new varieties of enemies make the game feel more fleshed out. There is a world here.
- Boomer is actually a challenge, I felt a little nervous every time I would miss a hit!

Now, the cons and what could be fixed.
- Sometimes when I jump on an enemy, they will send me flying in a random direction, or I will take damage after killing an enemy, which is confusing since I had just killed said enemy.
- I had no idea about wall jumping until I hit level 2, so maybe signs explaining different moves would be useful too, or maybe a tutorial menu in options.
- Bootstrappers are in a different art style from the majority of the enemies, and Boomer seems a lot more crunchy/pixelated than most enemies.
- The difficulty curve of Level 1 and 2 is real, and it made the game a little hard, which is where the issue you talked about comes in, the floaty aspect. I do definitely feel the floaty part with the bouncing off of enemies, but maybe this is an engine issue? I know nothing about Godot but I feel the enemies, and ledges cause me to slip off, rather than being able to stand firmly.

All in all, looks like you got a good project in the works here. I'll be sticking around to see how it changes.

ThatElfNerd responds:

Thank you for the feedback! I really appreciate it. So in doing some testing since the release, I found out that I can add a second collision layer to Pouchie that's only with his feet. So now he shouldn't slip off of edges as easily. Once I'm sure that it works properly, I'll upload the fix. As for getting hit by an enemy and killing it, is there a specific enemy that this is an issue for, or is it all enemies? I know I didn't want the ability to kill enemies to be disabled during a character's invincibility frames after getting hit, but I might have to put a slight delay on how quickly you should be allowed to do that.

As for signs on how to wall jump, I'm thinking that I'll add a tutorial map to the main menu, that way, players can practice.

I'm definitely gonna rework some sprites, as a lot of them are the first draft, and that includes Boomer and the Bootstrappers. I did a lot of the character design in a 32x32 canvas, except for Bootstrappers, which were done in a 64x64, which is probably why his style looks so different. And since Boomer is doubled in size compared to Pouchie, I obviously should've made him in a bigger canvas.

I'll get back to work and see what I can fix, but thanks for all the suggestions!
