The game seems to only work in Chrome about 1/10th of the time. If you're dedicated to playing it in Chrome, you may have to refresh several times for the Play button to even show up on the main menu. I don't think this is my fault, it seems to be an issue with Wick working correctly in Chrome. I have not tested on other browsers.
How To Play and Gameplay Tips:
- A and D to move left and right respectively
- W to jump
- 0 (zero key) to shoot (either numpad or number bar at top of keyboard)
- Dolphine will climb platforms if you approach them from the sides or beneath
- There are secret pick-ups hidden in each level, see if you can find them all!
I made this game for the Wick Editor Game Jam. The theme was "Flashback! Classic Newgrounds-style Games". For me, that meant tower defense games, that's the kind of game I loved playing on NG back in my early days on the site, so that's what I had planned to do. Unfortunately, I spent too long waiting for Wick updates that I wanted in order to make that game, so it is likely to die in my notebook. Instead, I set out to make a platformer, another classic type of game on NG, and here's where we ended up.
I had planned to do so much more for this, but unfortunately I didn't get nearly as much done as I had wanted to. The reason is two-fold: 1) I ran into a ton of problems with Wick along the way. Some were my fault, some were the fault of Wick not quite being ready for an NG game jam. 2) I made a mistake that I tend to make often, I bit off way more than I could chew. I set out to make something way too ambitious and ended up falling short of what I had intended.
That being said, I'm glad that I was able to finish my project, and to be able to participate in the jam. I'd like to thank luxapodular and zrispo for making Wick, and although I think it has some kinks to work out, I think it is a noble pursuit and I hope they continue to develop it! Also thanks for all the help along the way!
All of the audio in the game is re-porpoised (haha) from an old (bad) animation I made back in 2017 called Betta Days.
Known bugs:
- Sometimes the gun will stop working and you won't be able to shoot. I really couldn't tell you why. You should be able to beat each level as a pacifist though, so it isn't a huge deal
- The hit-boxes are a little whack sometimes. You may find in some instances that Dolphine will cling to the bottom of platforms with the top of her head. You'll be able to jump in these cases, however, and then she will begin to climb.
- The game might freeze up at the end of the intro sequence. If this happens, refresh the page and skip it before it gets to the end. I don't know what's causing this, it doesn't happen in the Wick Editor.
Unrelated Plugs:
Like Newgrounds? I make a podcast with my cohost littlbox here on NG that's almost entirely about NG! It's called "A Couple of Crickets" and you can check it out here:

I also make another podcast all about music called "Even More Sound". If you like music discussion, you can check that out on Spotify and/or Anchor.fm.
Thanks, NG!

The controls are choppy as hell.

I haven't seen a game more broken than this one. I mean...where to begin?
- The framerate is absolutely shoddy. This makes the game hard to play, particularly when trying to jump. It seems like the jumping is erratic at best.
- The music cuts out after like 15 or 30 seconds.
- It shouldn't take over 10 shots to kill the enemy. That's rather obnoxious.
- The graphics are crude. Don't know if you were in a rush because of the Game Jam, but there's a lot more to be desired.
- Eventually, the bullets disappear and you can't attack your enemies.
- Why the "zero" key to shoot? That doesn't make any sense. You should've used something better like the J, K, or L key.

I'm really at a lost with all this trouble this game is having. I have to admit: you got a lot of work to do if you want to be good.

GoodL responds:

Yeh fair enough. I definitely was in a rush to finish it in time for the jam and wasn't always able to get Wick to do what I wanted, so it is what it is.
And as far as a lot more working needing to be done to make it good, I think you're partially correct, but more work would need to be done on Wick Editor before I could begin to fix the issues, and even then, now that the jam is over I really don't see myself putting in any more work on this. I'm glad to be done with it.
Thanks for the review!

Good job working with Wick! I really like the music and the introduction cutscene. The gameplay is pretty finicky and laggy, though, and it's really hard to move properly without falling, especially in later levels. Like you said, though, a lot of that is due to Wick Editor's issues right now. (I'm in the jam too so I completely relate. The lag issues drove me crazy.) I'm glad you were able to finish and submit it!

GoodL responds:

Thank you so much! Yeah I recognize all those problems too, and I would have loved to have fixed them before release but that just wasn't going to be possible unfortunately. Thanks for checking it out, appreciate the kind words!

Doesn't appear to work in Firefox either, at least for non-Windows users. (I assume you're using Windows?)

Slowly loaded up to 50% then jumped immediately to 100%, waited there a while, then crashed. It also takes a loooooong time to load. What exactly are you doing in the code? What's up with people posting these games that take forever to load these days?

As far as it not being your fault because it's a deficiency in the tool you used (in this case Wick), I'm not familiar with Wick so I couldn't tell you if that's the case or not, but it's still your fault in as much as if you know a particular tool or framework isn't suitable, is too buggy, or flat-out doesn't work, then use something else.

Can I try it again at some point? Yes maybe. But that is my initial experience and my first experience with this game. And yes it also doesn't work on Chrome, as you state.

GoodL responds:

Yeh I get what you're saying. I just wanted to do something for the Wick Jam that ended a few hours ago.
Sorry it didn't work, I don't know what to tell ya. I didn't get to test in on any other operating systems than Windows 10 unfortunately so I didn't know that would be the case. Thanks for trying anyway!
