Spacious: Self-Demotion

Share Collapse

The first proper short in my sci-fi adventure comedy series, Spacious. (Some may recognize them from a one-off Flash short I uploaded nearly a decade ago!) Four galactic roommates - Technology enthusiast Leslie Fitchett, her little sister and aspiring artist Kiki, their alien temp worker pal Jed, and their cleaning robot Roscoe (Along with Jim, the friendly parasite attached to Jed's scalp), decide to embrace technology and advertise their services and skills by filming online promos. If only the process of making these and finding an audience was that easy...

Proper episodes of Spacious will be longer and larger in scale and complexity, but I started with a simpler, shorter cartoon both to start working with the finalized character rigs in Toon Boom Harmony and to let the voice actors have their first go at portraying the characters. Look forward to more of this group and the outlandish universe they call home in the future!

well that was very good!!!

Good animation

It looks nicely done, keep it up!

Art style isn't that great, it honestly is a little uncomfortable to look at, but the animation, especially in the faces where it really counts, adds a lot to the overall feeling of the show. From the very get go, the audio put me in a good mood and I was excited to see whatever I was about to see. The voice acting is great, and the crew you got doing the voices should be proud. The story is light hearted and combined with everything else, I'm really looking forward to more despite the crude line art. Extra props for having full backgrounds that complete the feeling of the world they're in instead of having generic solid color walls everywhere. I almost feel bad for complaining about it because everything else is so good, but I feel something really could be done to make the characters look better. Perhaps you might want to collaborate with other artists and animators so having higher quality imagery won't take forever?

All in all, an enjoyable cartoon I'd like to see more of.

Behon responds:

It's ironic because I have almost no experience with backgrounds and still feel I need some serious practice with them XD I'm glad the writing and voice acting were able to help you deal with the character designs better. I've been drawing these guys for ages and they've gone through a lot of redesigns (You can look at that ancient '08 short I uploaded of them as proof of that), so I don't doubt they'll continue to look different over time.

I definitely intend to get various opinions on them from other artists and refine their designs as I make more cartoons with them and further evolve my art style through drawing practice more, and adjusting the female characters' irises and pupils is on my to-do list. Thanks for an honest and fair critique; I'll take it into account going forward and am glad you were able to enjoy some of the other elements.

Glad to see you're making stuff again. Does that mean a new Wario Ware tooned is on the way?

Behon responds:

Yes, and I'll post the first part of it soon enough after finishing a much shorter Mario parody. I'd recommend following my Twitter and Tumblr if you want an idea of what I'm working on as I'm also juggling a podcast and occasional YouTube reviews.
