After finishing this game, I can't help but feel not a lot of effort or polish was put in it. It doesn't offer much challenge and would benefit from new and imaginative mechanics other than what seems to be an oversimplified and very boring space Invaders clone that can be compleated in a relatively short period of time

I would have to agree that it is oversimplified and boring. This is the first flash game I've ever made, and I taught myself how just from reading tutorials. I actually made 10 levels, but the mechanics of the enemy movement changed after level three (stopped going side to side and just fell straight down quickly). I worked on the game part time for about two weeks, but I have 3 weeks of vacation right now, and I spent the first week working on the game full time. So I would say around 60 hours of honest work went into learning Stencyl and making the images, code, et cetera.
My partner Tyler has been making games with Unity for the past year, and I just wanted to get some experience so I can understand him better and help more.
Thanks again for the feedback, and I promise my next game, Mike Versus Commies 2, will be a lot more polished and challenging.
