This is my very first game.

As a programmer, I had attempted many different games which were far too ambitious or out of scope.

I decided to ditch the fancy art, getting hung up on long hauls of forum troubleshooting and just make a damn game.

The product of this is the first project I have ever completed.

Captain Glory: Tropical Invasion is about a fleet squad commander that has his mothership about to be overrun by his arch nemesis; the evil pineberries. These fruity delinquents are out to infect the base with a deadly virus they carry in their nectar.

In a desperate attempt to wipe out the oncoming fleet, Captain Glory boards his ship in a terrifying mission to destroy the invaders.

How long can you last against these deadly foes?

The objective is simple. Last as long as you can against a horde of evil fruit and get your highest score.

Spacebar - Shoot laser
Arrow Keys - Navigate

Power Ups:
Fusion Vial - Restores 10 HP
Fusion Crystal - Recharges your beam cannon

You will have to be very careful how you maneuver. If one enemy gets through, the base is infected!

Keep an eye on your charge beam, and aim accurately. Too many fires in succession will overheat your system and leave you temporarily vulnerable.

If your cannon is close to overheating, don't be afraid to squash the enemies with your ship. It will lower your health but can be the difference between life and death.

The art was really great. I like the style. I'm sure some improvements could improve the game. Perhaps a visual explanation for why you need to stop the yellow strawberries, like you see a planet or something. I was strangely addicted to the game, I think that the simplicity works well.

Good work on completing a project and publishing, that's a big step. I'm excited to see what you can create in the future.

just opinions first I think there should be a choice to turn the audio off for people who do not wanna mute there computer and u could use a better starting screen and when you lose and it says the mother board is infected there should be a menu screen but as for someone who also struggle on there first game I know how it is

deadvelvet responds:

Absolutely! Sorry that the music got so irritating. I completely agree.

A better starting screen could have also definitely helped the cause.

The story is that behind your ship is a mothership. The pineberries are carrying a virus that can infect Captain Glory's entire fleet should it come into contact with their base.

And you're right, the first game is always the hardest. :) The game I'm working on now should be a pleasant surprise to anyone that's played this.

It's not a horrible game, and for a first, it's good. Still, the overheat part has always pissed me off in games. This one overheats very fast, and so that's annoying.

Keep at it. Play games and watch movies here and you'll get plenty of material for new ideas and future projects. Keep at it and don't get discouraged. :)

deadvelvet responds:

I feel that the main challenge I wanted to present to the player was having enemies spawn, not in massive numbers, maybe a maximum of 3-4 at a time, which would cause the player to have to think very carefully about where they place their lasers.

If that just isn't working for you, then perhaps there are things that I definitely need to reconsider when working on my next project. Thank you for your encouragement and criticism, it is very helpful.

Good premise, needs work. I would say this game should have a little more polish and shine. But if the game were to be released to the public as is it would not be a huge disappointment, just another mediocre game that could be good, great even but isn't and just needs more work.

deadvelvet responds:

Wow, that is definitely a compliment. I never thought I'd get a statement from someone that this could be "great" with a little more polish! I will definitely think about making drawings a little higher in quality with my new projects. Not a huge disappointment is more than okay with me. Thank you!

I LOVE scrollers... this one just didn't do it for me.... maybe too simple?

deadvelvet responds:

Thanks for your response. I will play more arcade shooters in the meantime, should I return to this genre. Despite the game being intentionally simple (due to a small scope of my first project) I will attempt to flesh out what is missing.
