Secret of Mystery House 3: The Bastien Curse.

This game is the third entry of the Secret of Mystery House series. This third installment takes place in New Orleans, on a 160 year old haunted plantation house with a dark past and many tragic events involving voodoo, that led to the local legend of The Night of the Burning Sorrows. You are the second investigator hired to verify the house hauntings. What happened to The first investigator? He went missing 20 years ago, all was found was his tape recorder. Now is up to you to continue where he left off.

I have a few major critiques, over and above what Cris wrote down below (a solid 3 from me as well). I got about 70% through, and then realized that I just wasn't compelled enough to slowly go through all two-dozen rooms again looking for the pendant slot.

1. I feel like the game engine is a problem looking for a solution. You did some good work putting the top-down 3D character model together, but it doesn't add anything to the game itself aside from slow the transitions from room to room. It's like Chekov's Gun; as a general rule, you shouldn't put a jump button in a game with nothing to jump over, and if the walking about didn't have any challenge to it, you should have just stuck with hot spots to click on.

2. The audio recordings were very difficult to understand; I would have just left a bit of ordinary white noise under them.

3. The house wasn't laid out in an organic fashion, which is part of the reason I had so much trouble navigating. If all the bedrooms were upstairs, for instance, it would have been easier to remember where everything was.

That said, I very much look forward to your next game.

Fuck this game is creepy.. I've almost finished the game at this point.. I've got the knife.. I don't wanna do the thing and end the curse, but I wanna finish the game.. Kinda wanna cry because I know that I have to look for it, and that I know I'll find it, and when I find it, I know I'm gonna want to cry and start smashing my mouse as I intensely click EVERYWHERE. But overall, good game, as it's been mentioned, subtitles would've been nice and the navigation could have been more point and click like you have in the rooms themselves, but it's alright.

this... is a house... of many grammar composition errors... ;( work on your diction, projection, sentence structure and word tenses, please! ;)

Really not bad, but the navigation is too annoying to me... A simple point and click would've sufficed. But I know that the game is now about 2 years old, I'm guessing the author has progressed by now! The ambience and decors were creepy enough, though!

Subtitles would be a great help. There are some glaring plot gaps: e.g. by whom Maria was killed versus who the curse fell upon, and why every other family member was doomed to die (except the father who is only mentioned in the initial paper?) And a mute button, as ever, would be very helpful. Also a way to expand the map (perhaps with names of rooms written over them, the black to indicate locked/closed doors was helpful but only up to a point).

Although slightly creepy, this is not what I would put under the umbrella of horror. Part of the problem was the lack of follow through: you had a few jumpscares, but they were brief and did not contribute to the overall atmosphere. The scariest thing was probably the chair.

Inconsistent is an apt term for this game: certain rooms locked themselves, others remained open, some were utterly purposeless, the shift for top-down to first person perspective was more annoying, especially given how easily your character could get caught up on the edges of stairwells, or loop up and then immediately back up a set of stairs because of their location.

3 stars is the best I can give, solid as that 3 is; there were improvements that could have been made in the nearly two years since you first released this game. I'll search for the others.

RetroRex responds:

Thanks for the feedback, per the story all is actually tied up. There is a companion intro story that can be accessed at the beginning of the game. Also there is hidden letters around with more details plus the recordings reveal the story too, and that is where I needed the subtitles. I will share you via private message a draft document that explains the whole scenario of the game past, present, future. All this was explained in the game just scattered. So my fault for not making it clear.

True the top view to first person is something that started in the first game back in 2009 and will die in this one. There is a side game called Dolly which is related to this game, that one is first person pseudo 3D Doom style. Hasn't been released probably during winter.

Thanks for 3 stars, that is solid. The reason this game was released now in Newgrounds is because I noticed by accident they increased the file size limit to 100MB so I uploaded what I had on queue, I never made any updates since 2014.

Again thanks for the feedback and your time!
