Hey cool front page thanks!

Turn those speakers up!

Hey I made this a while ago for the public domain jam on The idea is that you take a story in the public domain and retell it as a game, and you also had to include paper in some way. The source code is in the public domain, too, but it's like complete garbage because I'm bad at programming. And I'm not saying that because I'm kind of okay/self-conscious – I really mean it.

So I made the game and I think I got 5th place which is pretty cool. I was gonna upload it to NG right away, but I got all caught up in some other shit and I dunno here it is now.

There's no goals or score or anything, which means it a gay art game and it sucks. That's a joke sorry mom sorry I said gay. There aren't any hidden metaphors or morals or unintelligible garbage so shut up and enjoy it IT'S JUST SUPPOSED TO BE "NEAT"

It's an artsy sort of game, and for what it is, it does it very well. The atmosphere is pretty decently placed throughout the game as you rise higher into the sky to reach an unknown goal if any as you come along you meet some birds, and play with clouds, till you reach the end where you get to close to the sun.

The one thing that was off to me was you never actually got to see the sun, you just see the starting glow of it's radiance. One other thing not highly important would be perhaps a small note as you start to burn up from the heat. An ending remembrance of something ya know?

Though all in all, I enjoyed the bit of time that was spent fooling around with the game.

You know what I think I was planning to put in the sun and I just totally forgot. Although, you could say the lack of resolution is your punishment for going up to see the sun. I just totally made that up though you're totally supposed to go up and see all the stars n shit.

Beautifully done.

This here Icarus is not a movie. Saying it is a movie is incorrect. It's an artpiece that some like, some might not like, yet interactivity (to put it plane, "keyboard controlZ") is a necessary part of that artpiece.

Browsing through reviews gave me a feeling a lot of people gave a very low score cause they were expecting a challenge (and upgradez!)

Honestly I liked the story. it almost made me want to watch the stars go by when I started to feel guilty about trying to reach the sun. also its REALLY pretty. the art in the sky would be an amazing screen saver (or still desktop picture). I'm aware this wasn't meant to be a "game" more like moving art work you get to control. but I could only give 2.5 because as much as it was pretty I wished there was more to this story. I want more from this artwork. like something is missing. it left me REALLY curious. maybe that was the point you kind of had in mind at the time of making it? idk. but since reviews are opinions please don't be mad >.>

Haha no problem. In fact, it's a real compliment – it's hard to a elicit a genuine feeling of mystery and curiosity in a game with so little text or instruction. I want to try something like this again, but with a greater sense of resolution.

Dear Emrox,

While I agree this is not a "game" in the conventional sense, the way NG categorize files this is definitely more "game" then "movie".

And you sir say you are bad at programming. But I can also say I see a lot of less deserving work out in the web, and put, if no one else, me in to shame.

Please keep up the great work, and this is absolutely "Neat"!!

For those "gamers" that cannot figure out the controls:
"Space" key to Start from menu
"Up" arrow key to fly up
"Down" arrow key to fly down
Hint: Try interaction with the bird & clouds

Glad to hear you liked it! I'm actually surprised to see how many people thought it was fun despite the absence of rules/goals.

It's good for what it is, but after a minute or two, there's kind of nothing to do and no reason to keep playing. It tells the very basic version of the story well enough, but that's about it. Not really a "game" so much as an interactive movie.
