You're the first i saw who made a good joke of this kind of theme with calling spirit animals and stuff :P

This could be a comicbook plotline pretty easily.
THE AUTHORITY comics come to mind. Imagine a narcotic opens a psychic doorway to another reality, but to that reality we are an unwanted intrusion. So the alien universe decides to fight back.
The government decides to take more lethal measures to crack down on growers & distributors, but people keep using the drug. So the alien universe steps up its game from mere masks and taunting into figuring out how to send comprehensible messages and later unleash weapons systems.
(Forgive me if I'm a bit too serious, been having to calculate worldwide logistics strategy for certain useful goals and it's hard to down-grade for normal conversation in my less active waking hours).
