I found the cherry tree (somehow) and went back to the door. I've been wandering around and listening to the different forms of the melody, but I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing. Some of the comments mentioned opening doors, but how do I do that?

nice game. btw. here are a few hints: as long as you don't stand still near a wooden sign, no matter which it is, no one will chase you. that's 1.
and 2. : take the purple door only when you take all the other ones, otherwise you'll be trapped in a room with a white creature chasing you and with no escape
