"Are you a boy? Or are you a girl?"
Well, the game is about dysphoria, I suppose…
I signed up for an account just to leave a review. This game is really well-done. The faux-retro aesthetic is cleverly implemented, and it's fun and cute to play.
The only problem I really have is that the words you have to dodge and collect are universally referred to as "pronouns". Pronouns are words like he/she/they, words that replace nouns in speech. Woman, man, homo, lesbian, tomboy, etc. are all nouns.
Definitely interesting. The gameplay is solid, and the concept is a much needed change from what one usually sees on this site. I was curious about what would happen if you took to long to pick 'boy' or 'girl', but I didn't see anything. Also, the 'game over' screen hurt my heart. I hope you keep creating!
A fairly well crafted game, I'd say. It does a good job of doing what it sets out to do, namely highlighting the abuse and generally poor treatment of transgendered individuals by some of society's less understanding members. Not much to do within it, but that's not unusual for flashgames. That being said, gameplay does tend to get a little dull before long, but I can't really fault it for that due to the underlying messages. I'm at a bit of a loss as to what else to say, however. Overall, though, I'd say this was a pretty good creation.
You know what would be neat? A mechanic where you could shoot letters from improper pronouns to turn them into proper pronouns. So, like, for a trans man character, being able to shoot the "wo" out of "woman" to turn it into "man." It would add to the whole idea of having words shot at you. As it stands, they're just kinda basic projectiles.
