Aww, man, I remember playing and enjoying the first Nelly game a long time ago, but the level of adorableness and fun I experienced with this second installment is miles above it. How come I missed out on this back in the day? I'm confused and slightly sad that I let this gem of a game pass.
The graphics and music are once again lovely, generating an atmosphere of dreamy wonder, with beautiful sceneries, cute elements, pleasant music, and a slightly "child-friendly yet spooky" feel to it. Shall I say "Burtonesque", or is that too pretentious? Anyways, this game would be lovable to go through for the graphics and music alone, but there are also some awesome new things to see in the gameplay department.
Once again, playing as the cute little girl Nelly, you travel through a dark forest full of perils, all while jumping around, avoiding obstacles and interacting with your environment to solve puzzles, but this time around, you're joined by an adorable fuzzy fellow that you save from a wolf, and who can help you out of many different tricky situations. There are berries scattered around, which the cute little animal will eat to take on a different form with a different attribute, similar to the NES game A Boy and his Blob. Of course, there are many, many other abilities to use in order to solve puzzles throughout the game, such as the medallion that changes attributes of the forest, the crates that you can push around and a plethora of other things, but the little furry friend is the highlight, definitely.
Every short level is ingenious and adorable, with rich environments and interesting challenges that one must pass using some intelligence and the tools provided by the surroundings. It is so pleasant to get through that I nearly overlook the fact that, while the game is definitely adorable and fun, it's way too easy. Save for a few times where I had to think really hard in order to know what I should be doing, most of the game was a breeze. That's not to say it wasn't fun, just that the challenge doesn't really scale that much.
The game's story kicks off with a scene where you play as an adult that looks a lot like Nelly, and that, for me, was a brilliant piece of foreshadowing. I automatically came up with a thousand "fan theories" upon playing this short first scene. And then, after a macabre scene where Nelly appears in a mirror that suddenly shatters, we are led to the main game, which may or may not be a flashback, in which Nelly leaves her bedroom to find herself in an enchanted forest again. A few levels later, when she saves her fuzzy little friend, the game becomes her adventure to save herself and her friend... and I won't spoil much more, even though there's not really that much to spoil. All I can say is that, while the story is not the deepest there is, it sets the mood of the game just perfectly, using no words at all. There's one particular scene that... shocked me a bit.
One complaint I have is that the little guy will sometimes completely ignore the berry you put him right next to, and that confused me a bit. At first, I thought he wasn't hungry anymore, but then I kept hitting the "world changing" button until he realized there was a berry to be eaten.
With all that said, this game is nearly flawless. Excellent atmosphere, enjoyable gameplay, interesting but simple story, but too easy and with a few minor bugs here and there. I wish there was already an episode 2 of this (I'm two years late to say this, but oh well), because the way the game ends hints at something completely different to come, and I can't help but wonder what that would be. I love this, I want moooooore :'(
pleaseeeee I want to play Nelly2:ep 2. where is ep2???
I really like this game, it is somehow beautiful. the music are also nice, it reminds me of Marek Rudowski's The Trader of Stories: A Grain of Truth music ^^
it's fairly easy, which is nice
but sometimes the game suddenly turn so slow, I don't know why. Probably just my laptop though..
the girl movement is a little bit stiff and awkward, but that doesn't really matter
anyway, this game is great :D
what an awsome game
I'll bake you a cupcake so sweet...
