So while my pet project is still in the making, I had to make this little doodad for my final in Character Design Class at KCAI.

I had to interview someone outside of the class room and goad a small anecdote out of the interviewee that would (hopefully) shed some light on our humanity.
This is the story I got. A burnt out teen paying his newly acquired friend a visit. I've been working on this project for six weeks and I'm still not sure if there is some deeper meaning to be found.

Special thanks to Alex Regenold (aka NeroSkwid) for letting me animate his little story and using his beautiful voice, as well as illustrating the title card!
Pro Tip:
If you click on the vimeo link at the end of the animation you can check out the original animatic for Fred, as well as past assignments and pencil tests I've been working on!
By the by, I'm looking for actual critiques.
I'd like to keep making content for NG and for everyone to enjoy, and also better myself as an animator.
So if you like something, point it out and tell me why; If you dislike something, or something catches your eye, please let me know so i can fix it!

That was actually pretty funny. But Fred did not have a neck. Was that intentional?

Wakman111 responds:

Thank you!
Yup very intentional. Its part of my style.
I gave NeroSkwid a neck because I wanted him to be grounded in some form of reality and to be a little more relatable.
Fred was designed to stand out and be surreal which also shows through his actions.

I really like your art style and character design and your animation is pretty great too. Good use of fbf and some real smooth bouncy motion that is a joy to watch. The sort of water colour splishy splosh backgrounds were neat too and gave some softness to contrast the crisp lines of the foreground animation. The facial expressions were very emotive without doing the over the top, in your face, eyes balls popping out, style that's popular as of late. That said, i didn't really like the script or the voice acting. The plot was a little too random for my liking and lacked clear punchlines and laugh out loud moments. The voice actors delivery was fine for the casual conversational tone you were going for but it just wasn't that engaging or humorous. I think you've definitely shown a lot of skill with this and i'd love to see you make something more serious.

I'm really focused on fbf animation. It is one of the main things I'm trying to get better at. that, and actually giving the body noticeable volume and shape, which is pretty difficult to do with flash and its line quality. Although, I'm sure the watercolor backgrounds flattened them even further.

I'm actually really happy that you liked the facial expressions. I'm very influenced by most of the great animators on here, but I am also getting kind of tired of the grotesquely and overly exaggerated faces. I still wanted to keep that core of the emotive expressions but tone it down and sort of take it in a bit more refreshing direction, even though it may not be too different than where it was originally going.

As for the script. There technically wasn't one. I asked NeroSkwid to tell me a story about his friends back home. It was very on the spot, so the cadence, timing, and execution was all left to him as he recalled this story in real time. It was done only in one take and I'm happy with it, even if it is very casual and informal.

I plan on being a bit more productive and present in the NG community, so you should see a lot more from me!
Thank you for taking the time to critique!

Your art style and animation is really well done, I totally encourage you to keep submitting your stuff here.
About the video itself, I didn't found it funny (I'm not trying to offend you or anything like that) but I still found it entertaining to watch, which is what matters most.
Also the voice is pretty smoth, NeroSkwid has all the potential to turn into a popular voice actor, perhaps if in the next flash he showed more emotions and variations in his voice he could show off his true skills.

Nah, I understand that most people dont like or find random humor funny. It just happens to be a true event that happened to NeroSkwid and that he decided to share it with me.
I plan on having NeroSkwid do more voicework for me in the future, so he will have plenty of chances to improve
Thanks for taking the time to review!
