ABOBO SMASH all Expectations!
For nearly a decade in the making and major press for the trio for this particular project within the past couple of years, this has been on my mind for a while and I am glad to state that the project has not let me down. It is truly an epic retro throwback that pays beautiful homage to the source material while still standing out as an individual in the genre.
The variety of gameplay, even if momentary, is plentiful. The true to NES Hard standard is alive and thriving in this game, though any veteran of this standard of trial and error memorization gameplay will feel at home here.
The stages, bad guys, and bosses are all pulled straight from the classics, and even some obscure releases. Only a few of the characters have been improved upon and there might be a very few, if any, original content inside. Though this may sound negative, every usage of such materials has not made the game fall into the sea of 8-bit remakes and hacks, but has allowed it to have a unique voice that makes every sprite, stage, and gameplay feel fresh and new again.
And also on par with old school gameplay, the game is short and sweet and can be completed within a couple of hours or less. I am even tempted to say that it could be an interesting speed run contender to achieve shortest gameplay with 100% achievements garnished.
Speaking of achievements, the fun of the game isn't just the straight gameplay, but to play the game as Abobo. Most achievements are meant to reflect the pure aggressive "Chuck Norris-ness" of Abobo, though I am sure that Abobo finds this as an insult to his own epicness. Be tempted to explore and be chaotically impulsive. Doing so might reveal many surprises.
Also many old school cheats and secrets seem to be still alive in this game. If you faintly remember any, be sure to try some as they will further deepen your enjoyment.
While this game is enjoyable by all accounts, there are a few unfortunate bruises. The game does have a few bugs in it that causes for a few hiccups in gameplay and may put you in the position to reset the game, but the auto save feature and stage select applies some ice to those various sucker punches.
Overall, this is a must play for any old school fan or anyone who enjoyed playing their old grey toaster.
I WILL KILL YOU OLD MAN!
NES ....watcha gonna do?
