I've seen some horrible games that are a version like this, but this,THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!
*WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS*
As far back as I can remember, Abobo has always been my favorite Double Dragon villain. But never in my lifetime did I imagine Abobo as the star of his own game. And now, it's a reality.
Story: Abobo lives in the streets of Double Dragon. He's like John Matrix and Mike Haggar rolled into one. He may be the angriest and ragiest NES character of all time, but deep down he has a heart of gold, as he's the proud father of an adorable little boy named, appropriately enough, Aboboy. But when some goons kidnap him, Abobo will do anything and everything to make them wish they were never born, all in the hopes of rescuing his son, who means the world to him more than anything. And to do that, he will have to go through 8 totally mixed up levels. All of them are representations of some of the greatest and not so greatest NES games ever made. Not only will Abobo have to learn how to adapt to and embrace the different gameplay elements of each level that he's currently in, but he'll also encounter many NES sprites from many different such games, that Abobo will have to smash through his way.
A and S are the A and B buttons respectively, Abobo can move in all 8 directions, P is the pause button, M is to go to the main menu, and A + S will unleash Abobo's rage, when such meter is completely filled. The coolest thing about the rage attack is that it's always something different depending on the level.
Here's a level-breakdown, along with the kind of rage attack that Abobo can perform (unless otherwise noted) and boss:
Double Drabobo: After watching the intro (that's clearly a parody of Mega Man 2), and then witnessing the kidnapping of poor, poor, Aboboy, you take control of Abobo, as you punch and kick your way through different enemies, even going so far as to eat kids heads for extra energy! Rage Attack: Abobo will soar into the sky, and then pummel the ground, raining huge boulders in the process. Boss: Machine Gun Willy (known here as Shooter Gavin for some reason)
Super Mabobo: After falling into a small cell with a toilet, Abobo uses the toilet (but not before having a massive bout of diarrhea), to find himself inside an underwater Mario level. Here, he has a tongue just like Yoshi the Dinosaur, and he'll have to use it to eat enemies and spit them out as projectiles. Rage Attack: Abobo will turn into a typhoon that can kill everyone on screen. Boss: Big Daddy (A Shark with a Freakin' Lazer)
Urban Chabobo: The only level that Abobo cannot be hit in. Boss: Urban Champ (can be finished off in one of two ways: Fatality, or Friendship: Johnny Cage style)
Zeld Abobo: Abobo finds himself in a dungeon that clearly resembles a penis. Abobo has to find his way to the end of it. Along the way, he can kill the messenger, and find some delicious beef, the perfect weapon to use against the boss. Rage Attack: Abobo will use his sword/meat to kill everyone on screen. Boss: Old Man (he has, among other spells, the ability to turn into a giant)
Pro Wrabobo: It looks like Abobo found his son! But wait a minute! It's a trap! It's the Amazon in disguise! Using a pump that he just so happened to find to make sad-faced balloons, Abobo will have to chase him through a Balloon Fight scenario, followed by a wrestling match. Rage Attacks: Death Blossom beams for the former, and for the latter, an overly long fighting animation that has to be seen to be believed.
Mega Mabobo: Abobo finds himself in Quick Man's stage. Rage Attack: Mega Blast Boss: Robobobo (Mechabobo)
Contr Abobo: With Aboboy being transported through the jungle, Abobo has to go after Kirby in both Contra jungle levels. Rage Attack: Bombs, courtesy of Team Bobo.
Punch Abobo: Abobo has to tear Little Mac's head off! Rage Attacks: Abobo has Von Kaiser's music, Piston Honda's music and special attack, Don Flamenco's music and special attack, King Hippo's music and special attack, Great Tiger's special attack, Bald Bull's sprite and bull charge, Soda Popinski's taunt, Mr. Sandman's uppercuts, and Super Macho Man's spin punches and manboob shaking
HOW DO YOU GET THE KEY FOR THE LINKS PART
I wanted to post my review for voting this game #1 Game of the Month. (I needed to come back to play the game again AND submit it for portals history collection anyway lol.) I know that this game was posted in January, but for some reason Abobo's Big Adventure was on the list and you deserve the spot.
1.Abobo's Big Adventure- This was an amazing game truly deserving of the top place on the list, a game so big, it had its own countdown meter featured on the home page of the site. In this game you are Abobo, an iconic Nintendo character that is not as well known. You battle through different Nintendo universes each featuring their correct characters and respective game mechanics. This game has been ten years in the making.
The only two problems I've had with this game are that that I don't like water levels in Nintendo games which is the Mario parody of the game, and that I had to research and since I have moved back to Internet Explorer from Fire Fox, I had learned to run the browser as Administrator to keep this game from having sticky controls. This problem however occurs in a number of recent games and can not be contributed to Abobo. When we vote for animations of the month, we are advised to take originality over reused characters and music. The ironic part is that this is fully reused mechanics, music, and characters. This would easily be an exception to the rule.
Very good game, the controls are good, the levels are great, and I love the difficultness. I beat this game three times, and my only problem is: when I do "Left, Right, Left, Right, A" on Urban Chabobo, I end up doing Fatality . Unless for that, it is a awesome game.
