I adore myself some RPGs, and indeed this is one of the best RPGs on Newgrounds to date me thinks
Also a very nice touch naming the characters after the party members in Mystic Quest, really love that game.
A great take on RPG.
In a site like Newgrounds, there are many great games, yet only a handful of RPG can be labeled as such. And this is one among of them.
I can say that the gameplay is pretty comparable to games such as the retro FF games or BOF games. A very good comparison if you ask me. The system and battle is simplistic while at the same time is fun. The enemies are well leveled with the characters. Even, the weapons are quite varied. Many thoughts in this game is shown within the outcome of the game. In simple words, the Crystal Story is great.
My cons for the game besides the bugs since most games have the same problem, are:
*The weapons aren't as detailed on how does it affects the characters skills. Such as element specific weapons.
*The story is a bit unpolished which is a letdown for a kind of game that is about story and character progresses. Although, the gameplay makes up for it.
*The inventory is still messy looking even with the categorical section.
Overall, I picked this as one of my favorite RPG game in Newgrounds.
You copied the slime from epic battle fantasy, but still a great game.
awesome game. great combat system aswell as a great ability line system.
but it needs to have better weapons in the shop and the monsters can get a bit cycled
but GREAT GAME OVER ALL
I enjoyed playing this
This is a good old-style rpg. I, however found some of the dialogue to be choppy. Without real closure or introductions. That's only a minor thing though. The major part of this is the gameplay. While repetetive, it was tedious, which I like in rpgs.
1 thing that I would constitute as a "bug" I suppose you could call it. Attacks that deal damage AND have a status effect (I.E. Tranq. Shot) will still do their status effect EVEN if they "miss".
Also, I can't really tell if you meant to do this, but, Moves like Fire Strike seem to depend on magic power rather than your actual attack power? That would be alright if you didn't learn it in the fighter's tree. That also seems redundant, considering that you already can learn a fire move from the mage's tree.
So far, other than smoothing out some edges to the system...I really like this. The battle view reminded me heavily of Breath Of Fire II. I also hope you are inspired for a possible sequel. I don't write reviews often...I felt this deserved it. Thank you for the experience!
Thanks. I had attack and status effects calculated separately. This is so Accuracy stat won't be overpowered, and you would need resistance if you want to counter it. Warrior first skill (except phoebe i think) deal magic damage. I made it like that so you can hurt monsters with less mdef even without a mage on the party.
