Crystal Story is a turn based rpg that uses a random dungeon generator. You control four characters and configure what skill sets they learn along the way. You can earn equipment upgrades that will help you traverse through Evil Cave by destroying monsters or playing minigames.

good game...

It was funny to see the names taken directly from the four side-kicks you get in, Final Fantasy Mystic quest on the SNES. Most of the spells and items are taken right from the final fantasy franchise. The battle system is exactly like final fantasy. The story seems somewhat orginal. The animation skills are nice. Overall this is a good game not much to complain about other than the extremely slow leveling system. I haven't gotten to the end, but I'm pretty close, the cat side quest is really annoying, but its funny that the game acknowledges that the side quest makes no sense with things like "what could these monsters see in this cat?!" I would have liked more places to explore other than the evil cave (random dungeon button doesn't really count) it would have been nice to travel from town to town and maybe have some kind of over world map. Perhaps you can work that into the sequel (yes everyone will be expecting one),

I my very honest and EXTREMELY recommended change would this: Birdking should be the boss for floor 24 Because he is the most difficult to beat. I was really expecting hell after fighting BirdKing. SamuraiKing wasn't really a threat and he was very simple to beat. Birdking killed me 4 times, samurai king could not kill me at all and I was only 1 level higher than when i fought Birdking.

great game

the only thing i can think of to improve it would be like a showing of the turns of the players so u know whose coming next and when the monster is about to attack back, other then that im enjoying playing it

You deserve a game dev team

Nice pacing. This game could have definitely benefited if more people had the chance to help you polish it up. There's a saying that there's no such thing as a great book that's the work of just one person. Same is true with game design. That being said, what you did on your own is quite impressive.

Rather rushed

I wonder how much better this game could have been if you spent just one day polishing it up. I found this game a little rushed.

1. If you hold your mouse and move it out of the game window, let go, and move your mouse back in, my character will constantly move towards my mouse. I don't think this was intentional.

2. Some bosses are so big they can block one of Tristam's status effect icons. That is a little annoying.

3. If you skip the ending, it will go back to town but it won't automatically play the town music.

4. The "greater" potions are hardly necessary seeing how the HP one heals almost three times my max HP while the MP heals almost double the MP of my mage. If I'm gonna need it later, I'm surely not going to need it before the big boss battle.

5. If I try to sell items on the second page since my accessory inventory is cluttered with EXP and greed rings, it goes back to page 1 every time. I don't like going to page 2 every time I sell a junk item.

6. If you like input about the difficulty curve, bosses are too easy (for me at least). The bird king was the only king that made me struggle.

7. Either monsters poop out too much money, or everything's too cheap.

8. You can have a buff and debuff of the same kind at the same time. I dunno about you, but I found the clutter rather unnecessary.

Aside from little annoyances, I like how you use very few poses... I find it pretty silly (but in a good way) that you used the death pose for resting at an inn. I find it odd that Reuben's spear is like... 2-3 times shorter than what it should be in real life, and Pheobe swings her hammer rather awkwardly. If she pointed the hammer away from her body when she swings it instead of holding it perpendicular to her arm, I'm sure that would make her look more threatening.

The characters are rather silly. Oh well... I would think characters as flat as these are go great with what's supposed to be a light hearted RPG written in flash.

Ever played Final Fantasy X? They had a turn-based system similar to the one used here, but they had a display that showed you the order your characters, and your enemies will act. A display like that would have been very helpful for planning purposes. I believe a turn-based combat system should be more strategic than anything.

But, despite all of those little things, this game is pretty good. The mindless smashing and burning to level up to do better smashing and burning is good enough to waste hours of time. There is just enough variety in monsters, and mini-bosses you occasionally meet to make the game feel less redundant than it really is. Heck, it's nice enough you offer a choice on how you want your characters to grow. The mere fact that there's always an ability you could get if you work a little harder. Despite all of these little flaws, there should be no surprise this game has a rather high score.
