Finally, after more than a year of development I am proud to present this Nanobeast to fellow newgroundians.

The game is a challenging retro shooter with an interesting upgrade system that involves collecting power-ups. However, when you collect a power-up (P) that does not mean you have upgraded immediately. You get to choose how to use those power-ups to upgrade your general stats:
- speed of your ship (you need 1 power-up)
- power of your weapon (you need 2 power-ups)
- fire rate of your weapon (you need 3 power-ups)
- bombs (you need 4 power-ups)
- lives (you need 5 power-ups)

There are 2 additional weapons to be collected as you play: missiles and side gun.

There are 27 medals to be achieved, go get them!!!

Use the arrow keys to move
Press 'A' to shoot left
Press 'D' to shoot right
Press 'S' to activate your current power-up level
Press 'W' to release a bomb

The game is generally very challenging. There are three difficulty settings: normal, hard and insane. There is no easy.

The highscore system multiplies your score depending on which difficulty setting you play and how many medals you have collected.

The game features original 8-bit music written especially for 'Nanobeast' by Christian Erenskjold a.k.a Coffee-Break, a very talented NG musician. Other musicians who also contributed are listed in the credits.

I have been developing and beta testing this game heavily for a long time. Any feedback and ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Daily 1st, Weekly 2nd in games, Weekly 8th overall and more than 350K plays? Thank you Newgrounds! You guys are absolutely outstanding!!! Every single one of you.

Hope you enjoy and see you soon with another game!

Some difficulty problems!

Without a doubt, this is one of the best shooters I've played here for weeks.
I mean, what else do you want if you have a glorious 8-bit remix of a glorious rock song as your main theme, well-polished retro graphics, challenging levels, an original upgrade system (probably not unique, but rarely found) and extremely funny voice acting?

The only things that prevent you from getting a 10 are:
1. The ship having the same colour as your weaponry. This is quite confusing at times and lets you waste several lives, because you can't focus your ship.
2. Not so well-balanced difficulty. After level 3, the learning curve is much too steep and upgrade loss punishes you quite hard. Good thing you can always try again with the original level setup.
3. Passive resister medal. From what I've calculated by measuring the boss's health bar, you need 9 bombs and 6-7 lives (+1 for preventing game over) to defeat him. Even without considering the fact that this medal is only worth 25 points, this is sadistically hard.

RatherRandomReality responds:

Your points are valid. "Passive resister" medal should be worth 50 or 100 points, but there is a limit of 500 medal points that you can assign to a single game. So, all 27 medals had to be equally spread to fit within 500 points, hope it makes sense. Thanks for playing!

press A or D doesn't start anything.
Please fix.

Alright, I suppose.

I understand the concept, really, but I couldn't enjoy it. I'm using Internet Explorer 8, and every other key I hit stuck, and I was sent rocketing in that direction with no control over it. i know it can't be my keyboard, because it's never done this on other games, so please try and find a solution. Now, with that aside, onto the review! I assume it was meant to have pixelated graphics, so I think you did well there. As for the sounds, it sounded like you pulled them off of a soundboard. The voice acting was just lazy, and generally, I'm unimpressed. I know my review is a little harsh, and it would probably be better if I included the gameplay, but I can't do that until I know of a solution to that glitch I'm suffering from. Don't let my review discourage you from making more, by all means, no. Please make another, and use this one as a learning experience. Good luck, and I look forward to better games in the future. ^ ^
