[Before reading my review, please note that I gave this game a full ten star rating, and please read right through before hitting the "Useless" button.]
So much was wrong with this game. The graphics were terrible, the art was poorly done, the music has the potential to get EXTREMELY annoying (although I'm aware you can turn it off, and i'm currently rather enjoying it. It's wilfully, gratuitously, and pointlessly violent. You have to sell fish by blasting them into nothingness. 50 metres above sea level and you're heading for outer space. This is one of those games that is just so proud to be silly.
The concept of the game was absolutely genius. The deliberately simplistic, almost 8 bit art style, and the awful graphics just added to the addictiveness of this simple little timewaster. It's an easy game to grasp, but takes a while to really get used to the controls, but I think that's good in a game, it means the game presents a little hidden challenge, and offers real room for improvement as you play more.
This game was made so much more playable by the RPG style upgrade system. Simple, repetitive games such as this become boring when there's nothing to strive for, so I think the fish for money, earn money for upgrades, therefore catch more fish, make more money, get more upgrades, is a fantastic system to implement in a game like this, turning it almost into a veritable RPG. Certainly a fantastically addictive and fun little game. So many flash artists and programmers out there could have put this game together with the most amazing art, and absolutely spot on graphics, right down to realistic physics as the hook/pieces of fish hit the water, and yet, I like it so much more the way it is.
In short, it's a masterpiece, a true work of art.
