In the 1066 game you get to control the English, Viking or Norman armies. The aim of the game is to defeat your enemy's army by killing or scaring off as many of them as possible! The game puts you into the thick of the action, giving you direct control over every arrow barrage, cavalry charge and defensive stand. Taunts, chants and the presence of a strong leader will all prove crucial to winning the day.

A multiplayer option also offers the chance to test your mettle against friends.

If the game is running slowly for you, try right clicking and changing the quality to 'medium' or 'low'. This should help improve performance.

For full instructions, click on the 'How to Play' section of the game.
Moving and Attacking the Enemy
Selecting the 'Move' command allows you to select a new position for your unit. The highlighted area indicates your unit's range of movement. Different units can move different distances.
The Battle Unfolds
Once you have selected your commands, hit the 'EXECUTE COMMANDS' button and all the actions are played out in the Battle View. You will need to keep your wits about you, as you will be thrown into different mini-games which will determine the outcome of the round.
Click and drag your mouse on the battlefield to select the power and angle of your archer attack - then let go to rain arrow down on your enemy.
When two opposing units are next to each other, combat will occur. Hit the cursor keys at the right time to inflict brutal damage on your enemy.
Type the insult as quickly as possible to rally your troops and scare your enemy into submission.
When a unit is charging tap the space-bar as quickly as possible to build up power and smash through your enemy.
The morale of your army is incredibly important in the game, so keep a close eye on the ARMY MORALE in the info panel. Keeping your morale high and reducing that of your enemy will be the key to victory.

i love it

they should defiantly make more strategy games like this. i love the morale idea those it is annoying when you could have won but all of your men are chicken shits. my favorite type is they vikings and my least favorite are the normans they get scared away to easily

Love it!

Harald Hardradi is my favorite historical figure, so when I saw this, I knew I'd love it. The chessboard gameplay is awesome. The only negative aspect of this game is that it is not a part of a wider series. Maybe something that followed Hardradi as a captain of the Varangians, or a game devoted to some of the military campaigns of 'the bastard'. You can leave out anything having to do with Godwinson. That guy can eat a D!c]( !!!

Love the game

I love this game greatly. Play it several times.
Only one time has it fustraighted me. I was playing skirmish. I was the Normans abd I fought the English. It was on hard, so of course, I was having problems. But I outflanked and killed off the king so great shift in the battle. But in the end, it was Duke and about 150 archers. Morale was 3 to 2, in my favor. I was about to charge, but they taunted. Somehow, the Norman duke, with 200 men was scared off by archers who had less numbers.
Thats hilarious and fustraighting at the same time. lmao

But still, GREAT game. A must play for any who enjoy historical battles.

Great game

This really is a great game

I think I've played it between 100 and 200 times the past few months and I yet have to lose a single battle with my invincible setup ! ( Vikings: 4 Varangian guards, 4 warriors ). It would be great if you added some kind of ranking feature in your next multiplayer game. To be honest, the multiplayer was a really nice addition and kept me hooked for quiet some time. The history mode was also really interesting since you were able to play with every faction.

Here is my summary of con's:

- Like Urnam said, there is a lack of depth in the tutorial. After some time, you can figure out tactics for yourself, like I did myself, but it's confusing for some players I guess.

- Archers are useless. They don't do enough damage. Once you start to melee, they're basicly lost ! Archers wear verylight armor, so they should be able to move really fast aswell.

My suggestion: Make archers do mroe damage against units that are moving normally but reduce it against ennemies that are using barricade. That would add some depth to the game and force certain troops to barricade or to constantly reposition themselves

- Morality: I think that morality is pretty fine exept for the fact that shouting shouldn't lower the ennemies morale that much. I've beaten some guy with my vikings by just shouting at him lol ! Winning a fight should be more decisive in morality gain and loss.

My suggestion: Make morality affect who starts the turn. It would mean that someone who isn't paying attention and fighting in a reckless way will be punished for that. At some given time, they'd have to retreat and start shouting to boost morale again if they want to gain tactical advantage.

- Sometimes I lose more troops when I flank my ennemies ? I'd like to know how this can happen when I'm clearly having an advantage.

- The vikings are way stronger then their counterparts. Since there is no real advantage in going defensive with a shieldwall ( you do less damage and move slower ), it's mainly ATTACK and MORALE that are important. Those are the advantages of the vikings. The Normans are also great but the cavalery units are easily destroyed in melee after one charge ( unless you can move them away quickly ). The English are the weakest faction by far !

My suggestion: Defence should be just as effective as attack if you want the English to be viable and if you want to see more variation in tactics ( right now it's all about who gets the first charges )

Good job on this game, you get my two thumbs up and I'm looking forward to a worthy opponent :-) It would be great if we had nicknames ingame !
