Genetic Algorithms

Click to kill.

Had a go at genetic algorithms. They were interesting to do. Here's my attempt at a predator prey kind of setup. Whenever all of the current 'generation' are dead the highest scoring ones (kills + time spent alive) are bred together and then some mutations are throne in (I kept mutations rather high). Unsurprisingly the prey become rather well adapted rather quickly due to them developing the 'calm' gene in which they only move when approached. The predators suck though, due to the 'feeding time at the zoo' kind of scenario they become 'lazy' and just end up spinning around in circles. The only known issue is that as the prey get better they tend to trap themselves in the corners out of reach of the predators. if that happens just resize your browser window to view them and then click on them to 'terminate' them.

Meh.

I must be a dullard or something

Cause I don't even almost begin to understand what is going on in this game

Deadclever23 responds:

It's not a game, it's a simulation of predator-prey dynamics and adaption to one's environment.

Very nice.

Granted, this is a lot like this game EggWormGenerator, a li'l indie game, but this one is much better.
Take this idea and run with it. Add some more variations to the predators and prey. And try to make an animal or something, make them grow teeth, or something, evolve, ya know?
All in all, great game and I'd like to see you take it somewhere.

Deadclever23 responds:

Just a coding practice but I could do something with it...hmmm.

Thanks for the review.

Congratulations!

This is amazing man. Great timewaster. :) Congratulations. Very good job, and very good understanding of how things work between prey and predators in real life. Keep it up! :)

Deadclever23 responds:

Thanks. :)
To be honest I think i did a crap job at the representation of predator versus prey but that wasn't the point. I might add a second level predator in though. Hmmm...

Interesting...

A decent simulation, although it is very basic. Although a lot of people won't really get Genetic Algorithms, it is something you don't see on NG a lot, so it is unique.
6/10

Deadclever23 responds:

Supposed to be basic, my first try so I didn't overcomplicate things.

Very good work!

A good work about genetic algorithms. I like it very much, and I also consider it is a very interesting thing to study. However I don't think everybody will understand this kind of experiment as good as computer engineers (like me, yeah!). But you did a great job explaining how it worked. So it is great what you have done.
And just a little advise to make it even better: How about printing some kind of stats at the end of the simulation?

Deadclever23 responds:

Will do, thanks.
