My first solo flash submission!??! Just kind of a short experiment.. do pardon the file size, I know it's a little on the short side. A five-day exercise based on a story a professor of mine once told me. I'll spare the details so you can decide what it means for yourself.

Done entirely in Flash CS3 and Photoshop CS2 (including the 3D looking stuff, which is actually only some 2D trickery)... rendered to video because the number of simultaneous filters and effects in some parts tend to make Flash players seriously unhappy :0
It actually took me longer to sort out the file formatting than it did to animate and draw... go figure?!

Using the "dim the lights" feature kind of helps too.

Plz do enjoy.

Good Animation

But you made me sad. The whole thing was gloomy and the meaning was a sad one and I don't like it, I come on newgrounds to see funny stuff to make me laugh, not this. I suppose some people like to see that stuff but it's not you're fault I clicked on this link and it's not you're fault I don't like these kinds of thoughtful movies, so I just will not vote and let you be.

good animation odd but good art good sfx good story minus one star: no music

Thanks thanks and thanks, and you know I DID consider some kind of music at some point, perhaps the title screen, but I really did want to leave the whole thing sounding wide open and empty. To each his own though, thanks for reviewing~!

Philosophy Through Art

I was pleased to see Jszostak's interpretation of your animation (read a few below this review)-- I'm glad others can see that this actually has some depth-- albeit some ambiguity. The father's appearance and behavior seemed especially important-- he was completely black, a void of color and connection. I would think the animation was more a comment on lack of connection than lack of control-- but definitely see how it could be interpreted another way. When it's this ambiguous, it's hard to say for sure what the author truly intended.

As far as animation goes, I thought the use of filters and blurring to denote depth was masterfully done. The father's movement, especially during the brief close-up, was amazing; very fluid and appropriately blurred.

Anyways-- very cool animation. Keep up the good work!

redminus responds:

Oh man,
It's awesome that people are thinking about this little thing and offering their own interpretations. I could've gone into detail describing the meaning, but I think that (like most things) people who like it will get more out of it if they can look at it from their own angle.
Sort of like some kind of an animated rorschach test?
Okay but I'll stop now. Thanks for your review~!
