This is a game I made as part of my portfolio as a game programmer. It's a Rubik's Cube game done in 3D without the aid of any third party engines, just like my previous newgrounds entry, Venezuelan Flag. More than an actual game, this is meant as a proof of concept, to show both my art and programming skills.

All the code was done by me from the ground up, as well as the art, which was done with Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro using vector objects. The sounds were made in Adobe Audition using a mixture of samples from freesound, youtube, and my own edited voice (for the robot sounds).

I chose the cyberpunk look not only because I'm fond of all things cyberpunk and dystopian, but because I'm tired of every puzzle game sporting the all too familiar happy-go-lucky cubby bubblegum feel.

The cube takes a bit of time to start up since it uses Kociemba's algorithm for solving itself. The Kociemba algorithm uses tables which represent more than 20 billion combinations. So it doesn't depend on your connection speed as much as your processor speed. The algortithm was adapted from Greg Schmidt's KCube program, with some modifications for optimizations.

There are three buttons that let you scramble, apply one step of the solve or apply a full solve. To rotate the cube, just click and drag around it, to rotate the slices, just click and drag accross it's surface, the cubies will get highlighted and show an arrow that represents the chosen direction.

I'd like to thank those who gave me their support and pointers when making the game, especially
Steven Vachon from Toronto, Canada for his tips on the artwork.

Well...

I liked the way you "remade" an old game/toy, into a more shadowy way, considering that I don't like Rubik's Cube at all...

Cubehead

that's great

I'm impressed. Very good cyberpunk presentation.

For what you were trying to do, it's a very good job. I imagine that this is what Rubik's Cube would look like in a William Gibson novel, visually. The bullet hole in the screen, however appropriate, did not sit well with me though. I feel that it obscured more than added to the overall image.

The sounds were on target, and make me feel like I'm playing the game, jacked in on my cyberdeck, in some Neo-Tokyo back alley. I can almost smell the pollution, and feel the electrical tension in the city air, as my stimmed up brain frantically tries to distort the cube enough to trump the AI.

However, there was no "frantic" involved, and I pretty much know I can't "trump the AI", so to speak. The gameplay is lacking, and I only say that because the controls are limited. That's to be expected, because... let's face it... this is flash. You've got a mouse.

The loading time at the beginning doesn't really seem cyberpunk appropriate, either. In that future, all things (except what your life depends on) would probably download instantly. Again I say, it's flash. Whatcha gonna do?

Overall, I loved it. It's a solid and well done representation of a cyberpunk styled computer program, of which I am very much a fan. This being Newgrounds, though, I've got to lower my rating based on what I expect from a game. This gets a solid 4/5, and 8/10 stars.

NIckFoo responds:

Totally a fan of William Gibson myself :D And I totally agree with you, thanks for the review.

Great!

Finally, a game that actually takes some brain power! Great job with everything, the layout, the music, the coding, everything. This is one of the best things I've seen on here in a long time.

NIckFoo responds:

Thank you, that means a lot :)

Pretty!

Now could you please make a game that I might like to play???

Thanks!

=)
