What began as a remake of an old game of mine turned out to be a decent sized project that took me months to complete. After a lot of revision and redoing crap, I finally release this game. On 3 different accounts I felt that the game was complete, and then I went right back to the FLA file and made major changes. Here is the final game, hopefully without bugs, with great graphics done by FrozenFire, and with a lot of love in it :)

Gradium has 4 different ships in the game, all of which are very unique. You can use a ship covered with blades to chop your enemies in half, or use a ship with a flamethrower to do massive damage at close range. Each ship has it's own ups and downs, and they each represent a different difficulty. I tried to make the gameplay as varied as I could. There is full voice acting in the game.

Why, for the love of god, would you use the same sprite for bullets and explosions?

Why does each ship have to have a different difficulty? Couldn't they all have their own strengths and weaknesses and a player could experience a different type of gameplay depending of which ship they choose? I'd suggest divorcing difficulty level from ship choice.

I dont use the same sprite. The bombs explode into a multitude of bullets, I even have the characters voice it out with subtitles during gameplay.

The ships have different difficulties because it's harder to play with one ship rather then the other. They all have their pros and cons, but a ship such as the bladed ship is going to be much stronger then any other ship and easier to use for many different reasons I don't feel like listing.

The thing that really upset me the most was the voice acting.
People usually use "Full voice acting!" as a good point but more often than not it's absolutely terrible.
This game was no exception, most of the dialogue was pretty unnecessary too, (especially the boss parts).

The game was quite easy, if annoying at best. The bullets were far too small and were often lost among the explosion animations from the other ships, making them hard to see, let alone avoid.
The addition of a health bar also lowered the difficulty level, such that even using the "hard" level ship was incredibly easy.

This game suffers all of the usual problems with Flash shmups with some new ones too, it's a shame it came out so badly because there was clearly a lot of time and effort spent on it

You can actually turn off all sounds from the pause menu if you didn't want to bother with the voice acting.

A lot of people were saying that the game was too difficult, so I thought it best to turn down the difficulty level. People are still saying it now too.

Detailed review incoming....

Graphics were shoddy at best. There was no real theme to the game. It just looked like some quickly drawn up sprites on paint.

Voice acting, also, quite shoddy. I'd prefer no voices to the voices in the game.

There's a nasty bug on level 3, where if you pause it and head to main menu, you finish the game. Might be worth fixing.

The actual play area is way too small. There's not nearly enough room to maneuver properly. This should be a big one on your list. The beauty of games like these are the fact you can weave in and out of enemies and bullets. Increase the play size, and decrease the shield.

The actual ship movement felt slow and unresponsive, another thing you'll need to play with.

The different ship types weren't a bad idea, but there were some major problems with them.

The "easy" one I actually found quite painful to use sometimes. The spinning blades felt WAY out of place with any art style you could have been trying there. It's meant to be futuristic, not just "hey, this looks kinda cool! Let's just chuck that in there too!" It would have been quite good, if it was something like lasers (as a boring example) flying around it instead.

The flamer one wasn't a bad idea. However, against mines becomes a positive deathtrap, with the bullets being right in your face on destruction. Sorry, this just wasn't fun. It could be with a bit of reworking, perhaps letting a small gas stream out in front which you can then ignite ie longer range burst, short range suppressed.

The shoot-through-everything one? Painful when things get hectic, since you're having to fly through the space that you clear with a single bullet most of the time. Perhaps increasing fire rate and decreasing damage?

Final hard one? Stock standard shooter. Can't go wrong with something that basic, really.

Also, I still don't understand the attraction of putting a fire button in a game which is usually constant firing. Please, no more.

So in the end, not that good a game. Give it another go though, take the engine and change some things around, and you should get a good one out of it.

I'm pretty sure I fixed that bug a long time ago, I uploaded the new version. I'm going to go look at it. Actually, it is fixed.

We spent a lot of time on the graphics, and I think a lot of people are rating them low because the game has to be on low flash quality because of the amount of particle effects and things on screen.

And I'm 100% sure going to go back over this game and change some major stuff one day. Just not today.
