I actually like the game a lot, but im mostly going to complain in this review because a lot of the design choices are just wrong to me..
The game is basically N+, which relies on great controls. Yet the controls are really unforgiving. As are the crazy collision detections, where if you even toutch the edge of the fire tile, youre fucked.
Not sure why you limited yourself to retro (but inconsistant) graphics, because you are amazing at fbf animation and art, so the graphics are pretty average.
Now look.. i know you said "meatboy is Hard" and that i dont need to do every level.. but that isnt a get-out-of-jail free card to try and forgive the gameplay. Its just a poor excuse for bad design, an it doesnt work. The game is way too unforgiving, and doesnt reward the player enough!
Also, a time attack mode (piss easy to tag on), would add tons of replay value for anyone who can actually finish the game without clawing off their own face.
Anyway, i usually love your games! But i just like this one... please respond :p
A fun challenge, but sometimes sloppy.
Overall this was a fun game, and the controls took some getting used to at first, because it was hard to control. Some parts I would say this is more of a challenge. But a lot of it was just sloppy and frustrating. Now don't get me wrong, I beat the game, so I'm not just complaining because it was "too hard," the controls were just off in some places. Especially the missles. Those things could be pretty far away from you and still manage to kill you.
Also it was frustrating that at some points you could basically touch a block that should kill you, and get away with it, and others you could be virtually two blocks away from the same block and have it kill you.
It was also difficult during the moving levels. This game basically depended on having good precision, which is easy to practice from level-to-level, but it's hard to have precision on the go.
I think all in all there's only three levels I skipped, only one being in the main three chapters. That one was the one in Hell with the ceiling of rockets. That wasn't even based on skill, to beat it you really just have to get lucky.
All in all though it was interesting, fun, and challenging (Albeit sloppy). The ending was hilarious, and the unlockables were fun to try an obtain as well. Good job!
Don't get me wrong, the game WAS slightly challenging, but there was really only one level I skipped, and more out of boredom than frustration. To constantly remind us that "MEAT BOY IS HARD!" is not only lewd, it's misleading. The game just wasn't as much of a challenge as you made it out to be. Otherwise, a pretty stock-standard platformer with somewhat slippery controls (which I count in your favour since I'm guessing that was intentional.
Fun, but. . .
I'm sure a lot of people say that the controls for the game suck and are too touchy. I agree, but the game is still fun. It takes steady fingers to play this game and win. Too bad my hands shake.
Its highly recommended that meat boy is played with the Xbox 360 controller?
the controls suck... and um people that play games on the pc play them for the key board... not for a controller so.... yea..... dont make games for controllers
after the first few levels it was just annoying dieing because of bad controls
