I was asked to write a game with similar gameplay to the 1986 arcade game "Gauntlet". Dark Age is the result of that request. In order to give it a point of difference, I made this a fixed screen game (Gauntlet was a scrolling game). One of the challenges in designing this game was the birds-eye perspective for sprites. Often top-down view games have sprites on a sort of 3/4 angle view (pseudo 3D). But I wanted a true birds-eye view. The challenge here was designing sprites that looked like real creatures. I didn't realize how limited a top-down view is for putting detail in characters. You really only see their heads and shoulders. I'm very pleased with the graphics I came up with, however. They look pretty cool. I'm particularly happy with the exploding zombie (from level 2). It looks great.

it was interesting but really wierd. i cant get over the fact that the guy hasnt got a gun but shoots rocketrs out of no where.....lol
but the enimes r hard to destroy plus i couldnt get round the corner in time to destroy the block thing that the skeletons came from.......

bsilby responds:

hehe! Its a knife, not a rocket.

woow this is good, man... but why the heck the enemies "wallhack"? i can't get 'em

game maker

im sorry but this game looks like a game that a noob made with game maker

bsilby responds:

Actually, it was originally coded in dhtml a few years ago. I have only recently ported to Flash 9. Now, if you know anything about javascript and dhtml, head to my site and take a look at the original. I think then you will retract the "n00b" statement.

Wow....Me likee

Great game, hard because you can't out run the skeletons...And they seem to be able to see through the walls, but otherwise, well done.

bsilby responds:

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, the enemies do see thru the walls. The game was designed as a tribute to "Gauntlet" from 1986, and in that game they also could see through walls. Its kinda quirky, really.

great game

but on one of the levels the zombies walk through the walls
other than that it was a great game
