Your enemy is the fabled Leaping Leek, found only in the shitty regions of Belgium. Try to put a big dent in the population, or mankind is forever doomed. If you count your kills and notice that sometimes your rating is lower even though you killed more: the difficulty level is adjusted as people play, if a lot of people win, it becomes more difficult and vice-versa. The screen telling you your rank is not randomly selected. Not at all.
